So we hit Bangkok and stayed a couple of nights before we went to Kho Samui (I should add that we HAD to go to BKK to get to Samui as all roads go via BKK). We stayed at a lovely hotel on Rambuttri Road, which is a road that runs parallel to Khaosan Road. Its a really lovely street that is filled with really cheap street food (40BHT for a curry - that's less then a pound!) it also has cool t-shirts, beautiful leather bags, amazing hand crafted jewellery, thai cushions and much more... but the best thing is that it's cheaper then Khaosan!!! "Hooraa!!" We thought. The problem was that both Marcus and I (well more me!) went a bit over board with the shopping.......like a lot over board!!! I actually only have cloths in my rucksack and my toiletries are in an "over spill bag", but dispite this we have many good presents to bring back with us!! Thankfully, after being all shopped out, we had to make our way south to Samui!!!
To get to Samui we had to go by........yes you guessed it.......BUS!!! Whoop Whoo!! The bus journey was 13 and a half hours to Suratthani, over night, where we had to wait 2 hours for yet another bus to take us to the port which took an hour then we got on the boat and after an hour and a half we got to Samui!!!! We managed to secure a 2 night stay at New Huts resort on Lamai beach, after a very lovely lady talked us in to a cheap room whilst we were waiting for the second bus.
It was a very small, but clean room and as soon as we dropped our stuff off we took off to have a look round. I must add that I had been to Samui last year and stayed at Lamai beach. Luckily Lamai is still comparatively under-developed, unlike Chaweng beach - which is the reason why I did not like Samui that much. Chawang is a tourist hell hole with a Starbucks, Mc Donalds, Pizza Hut, Irish pubs and plush 5* star resorts. The mark up on clothing, jewellery and arts and crafts was incredible. We could not believe how much things cost compared to what we had seen them for in BKK. I soon rememberd why I disliked Chaweng in the first place and also was in disbelief as to how it had actually expanded even further down the coast in just over a year since I had been there last. We, both in disgust, hopped on to the next tuk tuk bus out of there and back to Lamai. After our 2 nights were up at New Huts we moved next door to Surat Palm resort which was lovely. The shack was spacious, it had a powerful shower, a blanket that coverd both of us and best of all the owner gave us a 100BHT discount per night for staying 3 nights, so we got the bungalow for 400BHT (£8) a night.....bargain!
Much of our time on Lamai was spent doing nothing. We did however unearth a jem, a restaurant that did the best red curry in Thailand and was made by an absolute sweetheart of a woman. The two high lights of our stay was firstly the little mouse that decided to use our shack as a thoroughfare, which actually was really cute... but Marcus would not let me keep it (Bar Humbug!). Although, it was an amazing gymnast, managing to jump quite a gap from the wall on to a wardrobe! The other highlight was when we hired out a Jeep, a little Suzuki Carribean, and went round the whole island (after Marcus's moped fiasco this was a safer option). One thing that can be said about Samui is its natural beauty, the mountains in the middle of the island are beautiful and so is the flaura and fauna.
Well after 5 days of absolutely nothing we decided to move on to my favourite island from last year - Koh Tao!!!!!!
