Up early and on the road at 5.30 for the start of the big drive.
Ate, sang, slept (not the driver .... visions of Chevy Chase and 'Vacation' spring to mind) our way across the first 1160 kms. Out of Adelaide you pass fields of green and yellow and ruins of some of the first farm houses. A sad reminder of how harsh our climate can be.
Drove through a little town named Penong with quite a collection of windmills.
Late in the afternoon suddenly all the trees disappeared and we had reached the treeless plain also know as the Nullarbor!
Back tracked 30 km the next morning to see the Great Australian Bight Marine Park. From May to October southern right whales migrate here to socialise, mate and give birth. Sensational viewing spot and we saw females with their calves frolicking in the ocean! They are so close you feel like you could almost touch these huge creatures.
The drive across the Bight is beautiful and wanted to stop at every lookout to see the cliffs that make up the bottom of Oz.
Reached Border Village and the quarantine station, added our 3 oranges to the ever growing fruit bowl and turned our clocks back 1 1/2 hours before entering WA.
