Day 24: Kata Tjuta
And another fabulous day was had by all!
This trip is proving to be all I'd hoped it would be and so much more.
I had hoped we would spend valuable time together as a family visiting many of Australia's varied and interesting places.
Additionally, the bond we are forming is priceless. Time spent with our children is both educational (for us) as well as a pleasure. We are learning so much about the sort of people our children are. I'm a very hands on parent and even I'm surprised with how much I didn't realise about my children's inner beings.
Today was another day where we spent enjoyable and invaluable time together. Our plan for today was to visit Kata Tjuta, previously known as The Olgas.
It was another day full of walking, but today we found the walks to be more enjoyable.
The first walk was to Walpa Gorge. This was only a short 2.6km walk that was estimated to take an hour. The walk, whilst extremely picturesque, was freezing due to no sun reaching the gorge and it was a bit of a wind tunnel, needless to say we walked a bit faster than normal. On the return portion of the walk, 3 kangaroos hopped by. Still amazes us when we see animals in the wild.
Before we embarked on our big walk for the day we had a picnic lunch at the sunset viewing area with a view of Kata Tjuta in the background.
After lunch it was time to attack the Valley of the Winds walk. We assumed by the name and the fact we had been warned by another tourist that the walk was very windy, we debated whether or not to wear our jackets. We decided not to as it was about 12pm by this stage and starting to feel quite warm. Lucky for us we had made that decision as we hadn't even got half way before we took jumpers off and wished we wore shorts. The temperature reached about 22 degrees and turned into a beautiful day.
The valley of the winds walk is 7.4km and estimated duration is 4 hours. Once again our kids performed admirably and completed it in about 3.5 hours. They enjoyed this walk more than the base walk we did yesterday as there were more rocks to climb.
In comparing Uluru and Kata Tjuta, we appreciate Uluru for the cultural significance it has to our indigenous and the diversity of colours it exhibits through out the different times of the day. In our opinion, Kata Tjuta exhibits much more beauty. Both definitely need to be seen at least once in a life time and appreciated for cultural significance as well as appearance.
This afternoon we had an easy couple of hours back at the van.
Tomorrow we leave Ayres Rock Resort and go to Kings Canyon Resort. Our initial plan was to stay there for 2 nights but seems we are ahead of schedule we are considering staying an extra night. We are going to see what the resort is like first.
