Day 97: Dubbo to Cowra via Parkes
This has turned out to be the final night of our journey. Despite my best efforts to convince Darren otherwise, he has had enough and decided we are going home tomorrow. Needless to say I am desperately disappointed but have no other choice but to live with his decision.
Today was a surprisingly good day. We visited the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope as planned but it was much better than I had anticipated.
Upon arrival we purchased some activity books for the kids that included a scavenger hunt for them to do. It enabled them to learn all about 'the dish' in a fun way. Obviously Darren and I would have preferred to spend more time reading every thing but we will just have to return again one day to do that.
We left the telescope at about 1pm and so Darren decided to continue driving onto Cowra. As soon as we got to Cowra we went to the visitors centre to enquire about a caravan park to stay at. Whilst there we watched a hologram display explaining 'the Cowra Breakout'. It was really well done, Darren and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The kids enjoyed the dramatic element but their knowledge of war is limited and so most of the content was a little advanced for their comprehension.
I would have liked to visit the site of the camp among other sites in the area but we won't be here long enough.
There are only 2 caravan parks in Cowra, we chose to stay at the one closest to the town. It is a lovely little park. We met the manager, Craig, on arrival. Darren and he chatted for a little while before he showed us to our site. Refreshingly, as opposed to Dubbo, the amenities are well cleaned. It's the little things that count!
