Its day 14! Wooo...we've made it so far! :)
Our experience lately has been much different that I would have ever surmised. Case in point - yesterday we went to a retirement party for a US Air Force fellow and were delighted to watch a fully-choreographed dance to Kesha's "Tik Tok". Not even joking. Plus we were driven home by the US Marines' driver. So Moms and Dads - don't worry - we are safe! :)
We made it to the cabaret on Friday night with a friend from ICRAF (Landry) who was nice enough to entertain our tourist ways ("O'Mahiva is really expensive..."). A Michael Jackson impersonator (the whiter Michael Jackson 90's version, strangely enough), a few singers, some AMAZING dancers, and a few US Embassy folk (Blues band!) were awesome entertainment for the night. Cait got an unexpected surprise when the dancers, dressed like zombies/mummies from Thriller all decided to stop by her on the way in. Their makeup was goooood too!
On Saturday our Cameroonian researcher friend Divine took us on a mind-boggling tour of the Market Central...aka a 4-story building that looks remarkably like one of those parking garage exit spirals. It was interesting, obnoxiously hot, and something that I'm really glad that we were able to see. However, I don't think Cait and I will be heading there alone anytime soon. Divine was basically fighting off the vendors that were trying really hard to get us to buy something in their stores. Little do they know that we are poor grad students!
Speaking of grad students, we have been definitely making some progress on the survey/research as well. Of course, the timeline just keeps getting extended - but it is definitely looking promising! First few days in the village are (hopefully) coming up at the end of this week - which will be an extremely different experience than hanging out in Yaounde. Water will need to be brought to us and we still aren't sure if we will have power. But we are ready!
I'm getting tanned, the mosquitos are starting to dwindle, and I'm still feeling great (well, just OK today. I don't know if I should blame that on our drinking or not...).
I promise that the next blog post will be much sooner,
Yvette :)
