Hola amigos. I know that my journal entries fill a void in your lives so here's another one for you.
The last few days have been unbelievable for a whole variety of reasons. Our Fraser Island trip was absolutely fantastic. There were 11 people in our group which is a lot of people to fit in one 4x4 along with 3 days worth of food, drink and tents!! We managed it and once we had been given our safety briefing by possibly the most stoned man in the world we set off. As an expert truck driver I took the wheel and guided the group to Fraser Island in perfect safety. The main hazard when driving on the beach is a washout which is when the waves make a gully in the sand and we'd been shown loads of pictures of 4x4's getting destroyed by hitting the washouts too hard. This sounds like very dull information but is important for a later part of this journal.
We caught a little car ferry over to the island then off we went. I don't think anything compares to driving on a beach with the waves lapping up to the wheels. It was weird! Our first destination on the island was Lake Mackenzie which is a freshwater lake. It was paradise, the lake is full of tea tree oil so we all came out with skin like a babies bottom. Here's another piece of useless information for you... there's more sand on Fraser Island than there is in the Sahara Desert, fascinating stuff. After our skin cleansing in the lake we had lunch in a picnic area that we shared with a fairly enormous goanna which is a big lizard that we were assured is harmless. It was at this point that I relinquished my driving duties and opted to sit in the back and drink beer, much more fun.
Once back on the main beach Laura decided she fancied a stint behind the wheel. One word for that decision - mistake. The problem with Laura's driving was 2 fold. Firstly she insisted on taking her hands of the wheel at every given opportunity to perform a dance routine to every song that came on the stereo and secondly she gave more concentration to remembering the words to the songs than to the direction that we were heading. The result was a 60kmh collision with a very big washout. Somehow nobody got hurt and even more surprisingly the 4x4 was still in one piece. Lesson learnt. The rest of the drive was incident free and we cruised on up to the Maheno wreck which is a shipwreck on the beach. It looks pretty cool so we decided to camp for the night right by it. It was Gems first attempt at camping so I was on 24 hour spider patrol, fortunately nothing got into the tent and Gems first night was a success.
On the second day we drove up to Indian Head which is a lookout at the top of the island where you can watch whales, sharks, dolphins, mantarays and other big fishy stuff. When we there the animals must all have been in bed because we only saw stingrays. After our failed fish spotting we drove down to a little freshwater creek. After 2 days of being covered in sand it was the nicest thing in the world. All the groups converged on the same camping ground for the second night so it was a really good night although there were some slightly overeager campers. One guy, an American jock, came up to me and said, I quote "Hey dude, we should like put all our tents up together here, we should like all go and cook together over there and we should like all party right in the middle". Erm thanks for the suggestion but lets not.
The next morning we headed inland to Lake Wabba which is another freshwater lake but this ones slowly disappearing as it gets filled in by the surrounding sand dunes. It was idyllic. That was pretty much our last stop on Fraser Island as we had to get back in time to catch the car ferry back to the mainland. Its hard to describe how amazing the scenery is on the island, we loved it.
Once back at the hostel we had to get our stuff together so we were ready for our bus to up to Airlie. The bus trip, which lasted 14 hours was not my idea of fun. Having said that it could have been worse and we arrived in Airlie yesterday morning. We're just waiting to board our yacht now. It should be amazing, we're planning on going scuba diving. Whenever we're in the water we have to wear stinger suits because the waters full of deadly jellyfish, could be interesting.
I'l let you know how the trip went when we get back.
