Hiya everyone. Suppose we better start by saying sorry for not writing anything for a while. We've been in Sydney for just over 2 weeks and just haven't got round to it. That's the apology out of the way.
We spent our first few days in Sydney sharing a dorm with a really nice Spanish couple, the only downside being the Spanish guys tendency to roam round the dorm in just his slightly too tight fitting underwear. Not a pretty sight first thing in the morning… Gem didn't seem to mind though. Apart from this the first few days were fun, we did all the sightseeing bits, took 10,000 pictures of the Opera House and went on a cruise around the harbour. We also spent a day at Bondi Beach which despite being smaller than expected was fantastic and gave me a chance to finally test out my body-boarding skills: Verdict = room for improvement.
The following day was spent cruising round Sydney Harbour and visiting the Aquarium where the sharks definitely stole the show. From this point onwards our living standards have gone seriously uphill. This is all thanks to Allen and Julie, my Grandpas cousin. So its no more room sharing with Spanish perverts, instead its been fantastic food, meals around the swimming pool and we've even got a waterbed! We've done all sorts since we've been here. We had a day in the Blue Mountains which is a really spectacular part of the world but it seems that like everywhere else in Australia its in danger of being destroyed by the bushfires.
The next few days were spent in vain looking for jobs in Sydney We discovered that unless you are willing to do commission based door to door sales jobs the only other option seems to be topless modelling, and it turns out I don't have what it takes to be a model. Never mind, we still found time to head back into the city for Australia Day which was Jan 26th as if you didn't know. We met up with Grace which was great fun, she dished out all the gossip from home and we realized we've missed absolutely nothing over the past 4 months. The rest of Australia Day was spent drinking beer in a paddling pool in a bar overlooking Darling Harbour, not a bad way to spend a day….followed by easily the most spectacular firework display we've ever seen. The intention was to continue the night in the bars of Darling Harbour but due to my choice of clothes (shorts and flip-flops) I was not welcome anywhere so we went back to Jo, Jo and Keelys with a lot of beers and drank the night away there, good times. Incidentally since arriving in Australia we have discovered to our amusement that Australians call flip-flops 'thongs'. Oh how we have laughed.
Since Australia Day we have been camped back at Casa Kendall. We've smacked a few balls down at the local driving range, been on a slightly too long bike ride and even been down to the beach for our first surfing lesson with Mike (Julie and Allen's son). The surfing lesson was unfortunately cut short due to a combination of bad weather and pant wettingly ferocious waves. Never mind, my quest to become the world's greatest (and tallest) surfer continues.
I think that's about all to report for now. I promise to write again shortly and I am very sorry its taken this long to post this journal entry… I'm a very bad boy. Anyhow I hope everyone is well and if you feel like sending us an e-mail, do. Bye for now xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
