Hi everybody
WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW. I have just returned from the most FANTASTIC 5 day trip in the Outback, taking in all the Red Centre sights and camping in the most amazing places in the middle of nowhere, with just the stars, the wildlife and the rest of the team for company. I had to speak French most of the time, other than to our brilliant tour guide, and do a lot of translating, as I was the only English person on the tour. There were 5 French people, two Belgians, one Austrian and two Swiss. We had the wonderful situation where our guide spoke in English, I translated into French and a couple of the French speakers then translated into German. That covered everyone !! I loved every minute of it, even sleeping in a tent and the storms on Thursday and Friday night. The average yearly rainfall here is 200mm and 20mm of that fell on us on Thursday !! It changed the landscape completely. On Friday afternoon our driver had to get us away from the massive storm very quickly as the area had started flooding and becoming a little dangerous in some places. He got us back to Alice as the heavens opened and an even more massive storm took place. The electricity went off for a while and all sorts of storm alerts were put out. When the electricity eventually came back on, news flashes were being broadcast on the TV about trying to get everyone out of the flood zones !! It's very exciting here !! Actually, I was told that as there is so little rain here usually (obviously) I was fortunate to be able to experience it. The lightning was beautiful out in the dessert, flashing behind the hills.
So, now I'm back in Alice Springs waiting to get my flight to Cairns at 17.00. Then it's straight on to the hotel bus to go to the Lazy Lizard motel in Port Douglas for the next four nights. I shall see what other trips are available when I get there, and maybe book a few days in the rainforest. There's not much information on that in Alice but I'm sure there'll be plenty in Port Douglas !! I'm also really looking forward to seeing the Great Barrier Reef and surrounding area.
Lots and lots of love to everyone. I'm really enjoying myself, despite the circumstances, and am looking forward to seeing Alex, Mike and Ian again soon.
