Just lying here in our hotel anticipating a day of goodbyes and train travel ahead of us. We are leaving the small city of Geleen, the quaint little town where Matt's sister Sarah, her husband Tim, and our two nephews Linden (3 years) and Kyler (16 months) live.
It has been just over a year since they moved here. We really weren't sure what to expect when we got here. Would Linden remember his Aunty Awee and Uncle Matt, and all of the time that we spent caring for him and playing with him in his first years of life in Canada? Our other nephew, Kyler, was just one month old when they moved here last year.
When Tim and Linden found us at the train station, Linden looked quite confused and stunned. He shied away from hugs and was silent for quite awhile, overwhelmed by seeing these faces that he now associates with only existing through FaceTime. Tim could only fit a couple of us in the car, so Sherri and I went with him and Linden, while Matt and Michael waited at the train station. On the way to Sarah's house, Linden began to warm up, enjoying pointing out the window and giving us a toddler-eyed tour of his new city....in Dutch.
After settling in at Sarah's Matt and Michael soon arrived with Tim. Linden heard footsteps coming up to the front and I said, 'oh, that must be Uncle Matt'. Linden paused for a moment and as soon the front door opened, he took a running leap into Matt's arms. My worries about how this would be quickly faded away.
Our four days with Tim, Sarah, and the kids have been wonderful. Sarah was able to get the week off work, allowing us to do day trips around the area each day. The kids have been so thrilled to go on these adventures with us and many great memories have been made.
