Woke up early, got bus to Galle for a day trip, a colonial fort on a panicular 10 miles from Hikkaduwa. Asked some tuk tuk drivers whats good to see in the area, and eventually settled for 1800rs (£9) for a tour. We stopped early and I stumped up 500 for the petrol. We went to see a giant temple which was cool, before moving on to rock temple. I was expecting some grand cave or something, but was let down to see it was just a Buddha statue under a rock roof. So lame. Turns out Buddhism is massive in Sri Lanka. Was really surprised as I thought it would be Hinduism. Afterwards went to a turtle sanctuary, had to pay another 400rs. Then afterwards went to see the local fishermen who sit on stilts in the water. Went to this woodcaving place. Then also went to a lake. I decided against going on the boat for more money. The locals were so funny here, and they showed me round the local garden, and even got me a free cup of tea. Some of the other tuk tuk drivers were waiting as their tourists had a look around. One of them let me get a pic of me pretending to drive his tuk tuk. Back at Galle fort I got out and the driver asked for his 1800rs, thinking I forget about the petrol money. Honestly think this mackem must have been yesterday.
Had a gander around Galle fought, everything was so nice as Prince Charles and Camillar were rocking up next week for a commonwealth visit. One more thing about about SL is that it rains…. A lot!! It was no protection from the western ghats like India does so it rains heavily every afternoon. All of a sudden the rain chucked it down and I got wet. Later on I found a snake charmer who even had a pet monkey on a lead which wore trousers. He then pulled out a giant snake and threw it over his shoulder. He quoted 1000rs to hold the snake and get a picture. But I got him down to 50rs hahahahahah. What an idiot!
Came back, got fish noodles for £1.25. Bargain! Another thing about SL is that its not cheap like India. Was a school boy error seeing the conversion of 1/200 rs and thinking it would be cheaper in real terms to that of India. Doesn't work like that… everythings pricey here. A chocolate bar is around 80p, more than back home!
Had an hilarious craic on with Paul, a 40 year old geezer from burnley whos always loud and happy, but not in a rude way. I noticed both of his legs were swollen and had scars on. I later disocevered he got injured back in 2003 whilst in the army, and got a good pay off. Hence why he's probs here. Also met Laura, really nice 23 year old who was also solo. Paul introduced me to the Arrack, which he dubbed the Arrack attack, the local tipple of SL. I tried one shot for good measure.
