5.30am alarm : ( today's the day were all excited for, our minitreking tour. All our thermals, gloves, hats and scarfs cone out of our backpacks today! It's freeezing outside.
Finally given into my fear of drinking foreign milk- my first bowl of cereal! Felt like a school girl today we all had to make a packed lunch for our trip, butter and jam sandwiches is as far as my culinary skills go!
As we left it was pitch dark and snowing, the town looked like an image you would see on a postcard. We begin our 50km journey to Los Glaciared National Park gate, from there we continue to Bajo las Sombras port to take a boat to see the hire of Perito Moreno Glacier and finally in the afternoon we go our ice glacier trekking!
Being a green tea, soon to be converted to matte lover, I always carry my good ol thermost around. After watching enviously devs and teens bought a spongebob thermost from Uruguay, forget souvenirs I got a spongbob thermost as our memory haha! Devs realised the value of beig able to have a hot drink on the go, I told her on the coach 'if you don't have anything valuable in your bag then put it on top' which she responded 'but it's got my thermost in!' ummm forget your money, documents etc your thermost is clearly of more importance!
First stop at Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the worlds natural wonders and the only glacier shows no dogma of receding. under estimated the depth of the snow, first step I took of the coach had my ankles covered in snow. The beauty of the Glacier is to hard to describe, it almost looks too fake to be real! Takes me back to the original Superman movie with the fortress. Within 10 minutes of walking around the viewpoint we here a gunshot sound, a huge piece of ice broke off from the glacier and crashed into the sea below. We were so lucky we had the oppurtunity to see it not once but on three separate occasions.
A boat takes us all across the water past the glaciers to the refugee where we all huddle up by the fire to have lunch. To Reens and Devs dissapointment their beloved spongebob thermosts barely kept the water warm! Here me with steam coming out of mine : p
This is the part been most excited for, the oppurtunity to trek on ice glaciers. Firstly we needed to put on a pair of crampons over our walking shoes to give us grip on ice and snow. Just as we were doing this a load crash sound was heard and you saw a huge piece of ice fall which created a massive wave spalsh and several minutes later the force of the wave travelled down to where we were standing. Never understimate mother nature!
Walking on ice is soo much fun! We all had to walkbin sigle file for safety. There were points where we saw frozen puddles/lakes, large holes where you could see the different shades of blue created by ice and water, mini caves. Reena had fun making snow angels and we all slid down the ice creating our own mini slide. We even had snowball fights with opposite tour groups.
Towards the end of the walk we came to a stop where there was whisky and alfajours (really popular snack here made from dulche de leche caramel, like a wagon wheel). The guide used his sledge hammer to chip som ice and poured us all glass of whisky to warm us all up!
Totally exhausted and ready got bed, but what a fantastic day! Still can't get over the glaciers.
