After 2 hours of sleep, waking up at 3am was a major struggle for all.
Really sad to leave Beunos Aires and our 'hotel'. I think i could of possibly stayed for a few more nights but any longer and my body would collapse from the crazy nighlife and odd sleep patterns. Reena our grandma was ready to go, but hey we didn't do bad for a bunch of 25-26 years old.
Taxi ride to the airport was uber uncomfortable, try squashing in 4 girls with 4 large backpacks and 4 day bags into a mini-cooper style taxi. It's like playing a game of tetrus!
Poor Devi and Tanna aren't well, seem to of picked up a tummy bug!
Bye bye BA now to hop onto a flight to Patagonia way down south in Argentina.
I must of been exhausted from all the partying in BA i finally slept on a journey!! 3 hours later we arrive in El Calafate and oh my it's 2•c! We spent 5 minutes in the airport just layering up with clothes! Glad to finally be able to wear my 18kg atuff that ive been carrying around! Who knew there were so many ways to wear a snood!
By far the smallest airport I've ever visited. As we had no accomdation booked (it's low season so you can easily rock up to hostels) asked cab to take us to town. Along the route we passed many mountains with their snow covered summits.
El Calafate is a small town, you could walk around everywhere. Kinda feels like living in a ski resort, with shops designed with a look of wooden challets. It's a very picturesque town at night with all the shops lights, mini conifer trees and snow falling. The area of Santa Cruz where El Calafate lies, is the same size as Spain, except Spain has 2.5 million population and here only 250,000 people.
Managed to get a room at America del Sur where we dropped our bags and off we went exploring our new surroundings. Found a yummy cafe for warm soup and crepes : ) lots of outdoor clothing stores, town is very much catered for tourists.
After popping into several tour company stores we came across Ruben, a lovely guy who spent ages with us in the shop, so long that Devi and Tanna fell asleep. 2 hours later, confused and head hurting we narrowed down our options to trekking on ice or just to visit view point of glacier, boat tour and trip to El Chalten.
The Torrenes National Park which both me and Reena wanted to see was unfortunately not available as it's low seasons, so many of the tours, busses etc don't run. Reena isn't a happy bunny, first she missed out on seeing Ushuaia (end of the world) and now this.
After getting some fresh air to clear our information boggled heads, collecting a heard of dogs which followed us around town we went back to see Ruben. I decided I wanted to do glacier trekking whereas Reens wanted to do second option and spend more time at glacier view point, so for the first time in our trip we were going to split up! (yes I can finally ditch hormonal Reena! Just kidding. ) 10 minutes into speakig with Ruben we were all confused again, finally before we changed our mind w booked all 4 of us on glacier trekking and boat tour! In addition to the headache, we were now all left with a bruised bank balance. [Mum if your reading this umm i may need a top-up looveer you ; ) ]
By now it was snowing heavily outside, we're all dressed like we are in Antartica and the locals are in regular jeans and a hoody! Must be laughing at us behind our backs.
Enough of the cold, I wanna be back in the nice warm hostel. Finally a place where I get wifi in my room, hello antisocial behaviour : )
We have an authentic wood fire in the hostel, I've been wanting to sit by the fire, singing Christmas carrols with a warm cup of cocoa or in my case I somehow ended up with a glass of red wine by the fire.
I think Tanna believes we are sleeping outdoors, she's gone to bed with 2 socks on, 3 tops, thermals top and bottoms and a snood for her neck and head! Then there is me whose sleeping in my regular pjs that I wore in sunny Rio, no extra layers or socks, and my sleeping bag liner.
