Manage to be up and away by 9.30 am this morning, a new Edmond record. We are crossing the aboriginal reserve at Yalata and then the Nullarbor Plain, which is 77,000 square miles (2.5 times the size of Scotland). It stretches 200 miles from the coast up to the Great Victorian Desert and 450 miles from East to West. It really is the outback with limited places to stay and we need to arrive at our campsite before dusk. There are dead roos about every 100m when we set off and then wombats, which are giant; much bigger than the ones we saw at the animal sanctuary. Signs tell us to also watch out for emu's and camels!
About 30 km into our journey we pass a guy on a skateboard!! There is nothing for miles around and the next town is 46 km away, where did he come from??? I tell you one thing though, he had a great tan
We have to stop at the quarantine station at the border from South Australia into Western Australia, a wee wumin fi Glesga checks over our stuff. She wants to particularly check Kiera over and warns us not to let her run off the lead as they have put poison down for the wild animals. We stop for fuel at Mundrabilla and the guy who serves us is from Edinburgh, are there any Aussies in WA or are they all from Scotland? We now have to put our clocks back 45 minutes. That's the second time today we had to put them back 45 minutes!
Have to sound our horn to get a dingo to move from the middle of the road. There are so many dead animals on the road now it is quite unbelievable, Alan has just said if I say "brace, brace then put your heads down", so funny, think he's been watching too many disaster movies!!!
We are really isolated now and realise we are not going to make our planned stop at Fraser Range by dark. We drive behind a road train in the hope that he will be the one that hits any suicidal wildlife before we do. Think about stopping at the lay-by at the side of the road, you are allowed to park overnight at most of them; however thoughts of the earlier dingo rule that one out for me! Just as we are completely losing daylight we arrive at a campsite that wasn't shown on our map, I'm not religious but thank you god.
There is no grass at all here only dirt and dust; thankfully it is such a beautiful calm night we don't need to worry about pegging the tent down. Bit longer to pitch the tent in the dark but we manage and head of to the motel for dinner. Scott enjoys looking through the museum and learnt about parts of the USA Skylab that came down here in 1979. Scott enjoys his second night in the pub playing pool (sshh, don't tell his gran). Still no phone or internet signal but manage to connect to the motel Wi-Fi briefly to speak to Ashley and let her know we are ok.
