Up at the crack of dawn to move out of our house. Still managed to be nowhere near ready when the letting agent arrived to do the key handover!! Should have put more stuff in the container, we manage to get everything in, but where do we go??? Thankfully agent is delighted with the condition of the property and the new tenants arrive to collect the keys. Simon, Claire and their 3 kids, a lovely couple who have just arrived from England and we found through pomsinoz to take over our lease break. They are going to take our old duvets (or doonas as they are called here) to the tip for us as there is no way they are going in the car.
Manage to all squeeze in but realise there is no way we can travel 3500 km like this so we need to offload at least 2 cases. Thankfully our container is still in the removal firms' yard so we head off drop in the suitcases, pity it's completely the opposite direction from the way we are going. Drop into my work first to hand back the inflatable bed, thanks CathyJ Say goodbye to a fantastic bunch of people, thankfully I have to run in and out, no time to get emotional. As we pass Mentone beach we decide to stop, this was the first beach we visited when we arrived in Melbourne so it would be nice to make it the last too. Alan and Scott take Kiera for a swim in sea whilst I repack the suitcases; it's such a beautiful spot, why are we leaving Melbourne I ask myself? We negotiate the horrendous traffic and after dropping the cases at Crown's depot we can breathe again.
Now at last we are ready for off, however it is now 2.30 pm and we are way behind schedule (not like us!). We drive back through the city and all the while I'm calling places trying to find accommodation that will let the dog in as we will never make Adelaide tonight. No luck, so now to plan B; buy a tent, inflatable beds and sleeping bags. Great, we can't move in the car again, however at least we will have somewhere to sleep. We make it as far as Clunes, which is about an hour and half from where we started, at this rate it's going to take us to Christmas to get to Perth!!
Clunes is a bit like the Tombstone, Arizona, kept waiting on Wyatt Earp coming round the corner. Arrived at the campsite, which wasn't too bad, although they are a bit different from back home. The caravans are so old and dusty and everything is really rundown. Site was really busy but there was a lovely grassy area next to river for us and we had it all to ourselves. (Well, apart from the mossies!) By this time it's starting to get dark, never a good idea to try and pitch a tent for the first time in the dark, although this one did what it was supposed to and we pitched it from start to finish in 2 minutes - now that's impressive!
It's dark at 6 pm here so an early night to get a good night's sleep, however an insomniac magpie had a different idea and had us up from 3.30 with its morning tune. (Alan wished he had brought his gun with him). Up bright and breezy and thankfully the showers were clean, the water hot and even more importantly there were no beasties to contend with. Although I must have shared my sleeping bag with a mossie last night as I have about 20 bites.
