I awoke early to the sound of a kid singing "Jesus Loves Me" not sure if this was because it was Easter Sunday or maybe he just liked the song. Luckily he didn't wake Alan or he wouldn't have been singing for long! Scott can't find a hill to roll his eggs down so he uses the chute.
Great showers, (the simple pleasures) car packed and we are off again. Haven't travelled far when we spot a car stopped at the side of the road, we are getting away from civilisation now so the roads are much quieter. As we approach we see they have just hit a massive kangaroo, luckily the kangaroo came off the worst although the lady driver looked a bit shaken. This is a stark reminder of the perils of driving in the Aussie outback and that it's not just at night that the roos are out! Alan is wishing his TomTom also had kangaroo radar as well as a speed detector on it. Emu's are pecking at the side of the road, wouldn't fancy hitting one of them either.
We have read that there is a fantastic campsite 21 km from Penong on Cactus Beach overlooking the Great Australian Bight that is well worth a visit. Road is a dirt track, but fine if we take our time. It is like driving into the desert as we see white sand dunes in front of us and we cross the causeway. (I hope it's not high tide when we're going back!) We are not quite sure if we have arrived at the campsite or not, there are tents pitched all over the place in the middle of nowhere. The showers/toilets are like a large wishing well with a fence gate!! We drive down to the pier and the views are stunning. There are tents pitched in the car park at the pier, it would be a bit like putting up your tent in the car park at South Queensferry! We take Kiera for a walk down to the most beautiful beach that we have all to ourselves. This is obviously the most picturesque site for miles around and very busy given that it's Easter weekend, so we head back down to the small campsite we saw in Penong. We have to wait a while to check in as you need to phone a wee lady who arrives up from the village on her bike. (By village I mean a hotel, petrol station and half a dozen houses)
Only place to eat is in the hotel, which turns out to be the best meal we've had since setting off. Wee Irish barmaid has great patter, turns out her and her boyfriend broke down there 6 months ago and they ended up being offered jobs in the hotel and have been there ever since. Scott had fun playing pool and the pinball machine. I wasn't sure if he would be allowed in to the bar but kids are only not allowed in between 12 midnight and 5 am!!
Off to bed at 9 pm as tomorrow is likely to be our farthest travelling day as we cross the Nullarbor Plain.
