Ho hum...
Well, in 12 months that have been about endings, completions and squaring of circles, here I am in Panama City. The spot where the South American part of that big trip 7 years ago started. And here it is, the final point. The bit I missed last time has been covered, even if there are still bits to see. Who cares? And according to the book I have with me I've been to the first destination (Belize City) and the final one (Bocas del Toro). That will have to do.
I flew in from Bocas del Toro with a great view of the Canal on arrival and now it is ABSOLUTELY CHUCKING IT DOWN. As it was last time. The downpour that's been chasing me around Central America has finally arrived - and apposite it is too. The thunder and lightning is truly biblical.
I've landed in the second cheapest lodging of the trip and it's a mad fine place. In the middle of Casco Viejo and probably destined to be something of a destination when they've finished the doing up the square...
Other poigniant snippets abound. I was in Romania when SAF won his first title and I'm again away when he wins his last. I was living in Cork when Thatcher was toppled and was away for the death do. Similarly, I was heading for Hong Kong on the day of Diana Spencer's funeral and thus do coincidences present themselves. As has been pointed out elsewhere I always miss the party. And on and on as the master might say. Still, wouldn't change any of it. And I have been at quite a lot of parties.
So... there remains a few days of R'n'R in Mexico and maybe one last site. All I've got to do is not miss my flight back up north tomorrow. Generally easier said than done. We shall see.
