Lima
October 28th - October 29th (Day 238 - 239)
We spent most of the day before Jess and T were due to arrive hanging out in the hostel with some of the staff who we had got to know pretty well over the previous few days. We also managed to find another hostel with a 4 bed dorm where we could all stay for the next two nights. The new hostel seemed a little dodgy but we had a padlock on our dorm and it was very close to our other hostel so it was all good.
As the day wore on Tina got more and more excited about seeing her friends to the point where she could hardly sit down! This was made worse by T and Jess being a bit late getting from the hostel to the airport. By the time they eventually arrived she was almost running around the room, what was even stranger was this enthusiasm had passed on to everyone else, including Moises who worked in the hostel, so by the time they arrived T and Jess were met with an excited Tina and an equally excited random Peruvian guy!
That evening we moved into the other hostel and then went out for some Chifa (Peruvian Chinese food) with Moises from the hostel and another guy we had met in our hostal called Steve, otherwise known as the white rasta from Bournemouth. The chifa we were told had a strong Peruvian twist to the food, however we found it just tasted like normal Chinese food you get in England.
The following day we jumped on an open top tour bus to take in the sights and sounds of Lima´s historical centre. The tour was great and took in some amazing colonial architecture as well as other interesting sights Lima had to offer. The tour made a stop at Franciscan church so we could go and see the Catacombs underneath, where an estimated 70,000 people are buried. This was very interesting but not for everyone as the catacombs are now essentially a collection of bones and skulls.
After the tour we managed to pursade the tour guide to drop us of at a water fountain park in Lima, rather than taking us all the way back to our hostel. We had heard good things about the fountain park so we thought we would check it out. The park contains around 14 or so large fountains, some are interactive such as the fountain maze and the fountain tunnel. Whilst the rest are just to look at, at night this becomes even more impressive as all the fountains light up.
The first fountain we came across was the maze fountain, there were already a number of kids running around the maze and avoiding the random jets of water. I was happy to simply watch other people enjoy the maze but Tina insisted on getting involved, although she promised me we wouldn´t get wet........So we went for it....We managed to get halfway into the maze with relative ease and I began to think this was all to easy...It was at this point when a random jet of water decided to hit me directly in the head and fill my hood full of water and thus soak me completely. Panic set in and I grabbed Tina to run out of the maze...in doing so we managed to run directly through every other water jet we had managed to avoid on our way in......The end result was we were both soaked, embarrassed and being laughed at by all the Peruvians who had watched the whole episode. The rest of the park was very interesting albeit very wet and cold!
The following day we got up early to pack and took a taxi to the airport to catch our flight to Cusco.
