El Chalten
Dragoman Day 11 - Day 14
January 3rd - January 6th
Day 305 - 308
The morning before we arrived in El Chalten we went to the Cave of Hands. It is not really a cave but a tour of the side of a mountain that contain paintings that are 3000 - 9000 years old. The paintings are mainly hand prints but also depicts how the people hunted and lived. It was ok but I was looking forward to getting to El chalten and staying in a hostel!! Woo showers...
We spent two and half days in El Chalten and we were very busy doing activities. Chris wanted to spend his time drinking in the mico brewery with his gwp but I got my way and we spent two days hiking around the Fitzroy range.
The first day we went to Laguna Torre a 6hr return hike. The second day we went to Laguna de los tros a 9hr return hike. We treated ourselves to waffles after that one!! Both hikes were really good but the second day was spectacular, really amazing and completely worth the hiking. The only real annoyance were the huge horse flies that were attacking and biting us.
The hikes leading up to the lagunas were really good as the terrain kept on changing and was keeping me busy instead of focusing on the pain of the walking... :)
On the last morning we were there we paid to do a mini trek on Viedma glacier. I wanted to do a long trek on Perito Moreno glacier but unfortunately we had no time for that. We travelled to the glacier via ferry and then we had to climb over some rocks before we saw the edge of the glacier.
We were then fitted with crampons, which looked very dangerous but made me feel invincible. The mini trek was good but didn't quite live up to my expectations. By the time I got used to wearing the crampons we had to leave, it was quite gimmicky as well giving us baileys to drink with glacier ice, posing with ice picks etc. I would rather had spent that extra time walking on the glacier.
I was also expecting the glacier to be extremely blue but this one was covered in stones and dirt. I am still glad that I did it though!! I have walked on a glacier....
