El Calafate
Dragoman Day 14 - Day 15
January 6th - January 7th
Day 308 - Day 309
We arrived to El Calafate in the early evening, it felt nice to continue staying in a hostel. However the downside was it was me and three stinky men. One being especially bad.
The next day we did a group tour to Perito Moreno glacier. It took a couple of hours to drive to the national park of Los glacieros (s). On the way we stopped at a 'condor' sighting. The Condor was perched on a tree stump very still.
We then stopped at a very strange cafe where they kept a baby guanaco that was being fed by bottle and kept chasing everyone around. In fact it started licking Jess' face (dragoman trip girl). We then discovered a little fox inside the cafe where Jess proceeded to hold the fox but a very unfortunate accident happened. Jess got pee'ed on.
We finally reached the national park where we went on a one hour boat ride to see the front of the glacier. As we got inside the boat we were shocked to see a photo slideshow of a girl in a very skimpy bikini posing by the glacier! I'm sure all the boys loved it. The guy behind the desk told us in a very proud manner that the girl was his sister...
After the boat ride we went to a different face of the glacier and spent a couple of hours walking along the boardwalk and watching the glacier. We were waiting for big chunks of ice to fall off which we didn't manage to see but we could hear bits falling off in the distance.
Overall the day was amazing and a definite highlight! The weather was perfect; clear and sunny. The glacier itself was very impressive and looked exactly the photos! It would have been great to do a trek on the top of the glacier though.
That evening we drowned our sorrows with the swedes as we found out that the 'w' trek in Torres Del Paine national park was closed due to a fire started by an Israeli tourist. Stupid tourists!!!
