Oops haven't done this in a while but it's pretty same old round here :) the children at the school are doing well and we had great fun making posters for the classrooms, learning new games and singing songs last week. I've taught them the rubber chicken which they love and also the 'buzz' number game we used to play in maths. It's so funny how much I'm wracking my brain for activities I did in school and educational games..channelling my inner Ms Nevin and Mrs Berry all the time! Today we taught them adjectives and I rendered having to draw a monster in German and write sentences describing it which they loved and we had some great monsters produced. We also made 'good habit' posters like we've made in French during the past and they love doing something creative as they don't usually get a chance. It's strange how much they doubt their own abilities though which is so different from a confident barfield or st cats child. We had to really persuade them to come up with their own monsters rather than copying our example as they say it won't be as good. Some of them really blossomed though which was lovely to see and they were so proud of themselves. We're also teaching them social studies too now which is like simple PSHE and have started on the family. Today, as 3 of us leave this week from different classes, we had our farewell ceremony with the headmaster which was lovely as he made a speech about how much our teaching means to the school. He then thumbed on the red powder to our foreheads to wish us luck for the future and tied a scarf around our necks :) all very lovely and he loved the monsters created too...sorry I just love these monsters!
The women at the carpet favtory are doing well too and I'm so happy that I've now moved three of them onto words! We've started with their names and they're doing well and pleased to not be sounding out their ABCs over and over again! Still have two on ABC though so it's great fun juggling them all with different exercises!!! We taught the children 'what's the time mr wolf' and 'grandmas footsteps' yesterday which was hilarious outside and once again lots of the workers came out to watch the fun :) actually none of the others volunteering with me had played them either so the 'new game' fun was popular with everyone! This afternoon we are throwing a party in the carpet factory to say goodbye and the women are cooking us meat..MEAT!!! WAHOOOO! The three of us went to the supermarket this morning and ce back laden with drinks, crisps, biscuits, cake and balloons for everyone. It's so lovely how looking forward to the party they are and I can't wait to try their cooking!
Last weekend we spent Friday hiking in a national park with some of Veronica's students from the women's empowerment classes. It was hilarious as they hadn't warned any of us we'd be hiking so we climbed up wearing leggings and flip flops! We got quite a few looks as 4 western girls and 5 Nepali women splashed in the water of the streams and took a zillion photos (they're almost as bad as the Chinese!!) but had a lot of fun together. The hour bus ride spent standing to get there was interesting but worth it :) I must say that I do feel my German is improving..random I know! We've got a great system going as when we're out and about or bargaining for things we speak German so that the shopkeepers or others can't understand. As you can imagine I'm in my element and understand basically everything the other two say. Nicole is from Switzerland though and Swiss German is crazy..Alicia from Germany hardly understands it either though so hoch Deutsch works :) ploughing through the German Disney songs still too :) I get laughed at when I say some things...apparently some words I know are reall old fashioned or silly..but great fun trying!
Right I'd better go...party to get to!
