Yesterday i went with Janet the other english lady that is helping out with the children at the orphanage to another orphanage called MOLOLINO it was the one featured on the televison programme re the orphanage in Bulgaria. This orphanage was the only one that would let Kate Beu the reporter from the tv in to film so it begs belief what the other orphanages are like. Since the filming UNICEF and other English charities have got involved to try and sort out the problems there.
The children had been so neglected many were not able to speak as they had never been taught some were bed ridden as they had never had the physiotherapy to teach them to walk One boy aged 24 only had the top half of his body there had been nothing else wrong with his brain when he went into the orphanage but as he had never had any interaction with staff he has now become brain damaged due to lack of simulation.
Many of the children were so under nourished they had been removed to the hospital for care. One child who was sitting in a padded chair looked about 3 when i asked how old he was he was 13!
We met with a man called Hugh from England who runs the bulgarian project he explained to me that in the past the children were brought here at 3 and just left The director was so corrupt that the food which the goverment supplied was sold on the black market and so the children did not get the correct diet. This children look like they have come from a concentration camp, It was heartbreaking but thank god this chartiy has got involved and is now changing things the care worker are now being trained. and things are looking up for the children there.
We asked Hugh to come with us to visit our orphanage and he was very concerned about the about of children all living in the conditions there. He has given us from the charity 20.00 per child to buy pyjammes slippers underwear and wash bags with toothpaste soap and toothbrushes as the children do not have any.
Another thing we are very concerned with is the diet of the children we have now been there at lunch times and tea times and all they seem to have is soup one slice bread and some jelly. We are talking about children from age 7 - 18. I know my sons when they were teenagers never stopped eating so this poor children must be hungry all the time. Instead of taking sweets we are now taking oranges for them to try and give them some vitimans, as a lot of the children have very bad scabs on their faces and bodies. Through Hugh we are arranging a team of assessors and dietican from the uk to come an assess the childrens needs as we are still very concerned that the children have nothing to do. Many of the children would be very bright if only they had the right stimulation one little down syndrome girl called Gergana could be so bright if they were any trained carers to teach her everytime i go she remembers me and the game we play,
At the moment we are trying to find a lorry or van that will collect all the donated items in the UK as we have loads of toys clothes etc to bring out to Bulgaria i have contacted some transport companies but have had no feedback as yet so if any one has any ideas please let me know.
When i come back in March any cash donations i will collect will not be given straight to the orphange but i will purchase the things the children need.
So once again i will be over in March to see everyone and if anyone wants to give any cash it would be very appriecated
