- this is going to be a long one, go grab a cup of tea, a couple of biscuits and get comfy.. -
We had made plans for both good and bad weather depending on if it decided to rain that morning. So knowing what you know about Victorias ever changing weather patterns take a guess what we woke up too.. I was feeling very home from home let's just say that!
So it was chucking it down which obviously restricted us! We decided that we wanted I make sure we did the whole road and do it properly so we would drive to the furthest sightseeing spot and then drive back along the road stopping again at every spot hopefully getting some better pictures!
We spent an hour or so driving to the Bay of Islands and Bay of Mantras but the weather was just awful. It was so misty and the patchy rain just didn't help! Once we admitted defeat we headed back towards the 12 Apostles having to drive through Pt. Campbell so we stopped and got some lunch!
The weather did pick up which was good as we were both starting to feel a little fed up.. I mean we come all this way from home, a different hemisphere and it's just bloody raining. I wasn't impressed as my ticket, well it wasn't cheap! So yeah, we started to head off, back down the Ocean Road stopping at every stop! We pulled in to one called Loch Arc Gorge which we had seen yesterday briefly before the heavens opened! Yesterday we didn't see that there was another way we could go so wanting to explore we walked down to see this river that lead into the sea!
Now this part of the day will absolutely stay with me forever. I know that no matter how hard I try when writing about it, it will never be as funny as when it happened. If only someone had recorded it because it was gold. I decided I wanted to get close to nature having come all this way so when we got down to the beach I climbed across the rocks that hang over the sea.. Now with the weather being as bad as it was, the sea was very rough and the waves were smashing up over the rocks..
Ben decided he wanted a picture of him hanging of this rock edge about a mile from where we were and it was safe! So off he goes jumping around getting in position and I'm left with his very expensive camera.. The shots were taken and I decided to take a little stroll over, you know, in the gale force winds, avoiding the numerous puddles so I didn't ruin the WHITE converse! Nearly died, after skating on a puddle.. You know when you have those mini heart attacks - yeah I had about 5 in a minute!
When I reached him, I gave him the camera before I had any more opportunities to break it and quickly realised I could get a really good selfie from standing on this rock. Picture this, me looking casual and then a huge wave in the background, doing it's thing. All I needed to do now was get in position and wait.. I was standing, holding the phone, giving my best smile watching for the waves.. then out of nowhere one just appears coming over this rock and the noise it made hitting the rock made me jump and scream so bad that the picture I took is the worst yet best I have probably ever taken! Ben obviously wanted to get in on the action so he is standing with his camera ready but none come, well baby ones do.. So I suggested we take a step or two closer and get lower so the waves looked bigger. We didn't need to do this! Shall I tell you why..? Because the second we turned and moved closer a 20ft wave (probably bigger) came out of nowhere and covered us.. Now we were I don't know maybe 4/5 metres away from the edge and the wave went over us probably the same distance again! We were beyond wet, soaked through and the issue with this was it's a freezing cold day ad we have jeans and hoodies on with no spare clothes, well none that are appropriate! We hurried back to the car and got changed into what other clothes we had.. Mine was a strappy top with high waisted shorts that would only be suitable on a beach in Thailand. As we went to the next stop and the weather was just as windy the looks I was getting, well I'm sure you can imagine! I may as well been 16 and pushing a pram around.. I felt I needed to tell them why I was half naked when it was only 10', windy and rainy! Ben obviously found this hilarious!
After all that excitement, we carried on stopping everywhere and the weather did get slightly better! We made it to the apostles and got enough selfies to last a lifetime!
I'm definitely glad I did it, and obviously getting to see Ben again was good as well even if the weather was shocking we still had a great time! We drove all the way back to Torquay and stayed there for a night as it was about an hour away from Melbourne..
Beyond tired, it's straight to bed because we want to see a 'sunrise' tomorrow .. please don't rain, please don't rain..
