MUI NE BEACH, Vietnam, 3 nights
Woke up early and had our free breakfast in the Green Apple restaurant attached to the hostel. We were given a free bottle of water each which was nice. Our bus picked us u at 8am and took us to Mui Ne beach. The bus took 4 hours so probably one of the quickest stops so far. Met a Canadian lad on there who was fun and a guy from London who was traveling on his own. The bus stopped at some sort o farm shop where they ripped off tourists by keeping small denominations of change. After a few hours the bus stopped again, we weren’t sure why because we were so close to Mui Ne, we were practically there). We reckon it must be the driver’s cafe, we didn’t order anything. The coach disappeared so we all thought that was the last we will see of our bags but about 20 minutes later the coach reappeared. They don’t explain anything to you here so you just have to go with the flow and try not to get annoyed by it.
We finally got dropped off in Mui Ne. The stretches of beach on the way to the tourist town were beautiful. Got off the bus with our backpacks and decided to ask some Italian couple if we could share a cab with them. We hadn’t booked anywhere to stay and when the cab pulled up outside Heap Hoa Beach Bungalows we thought we would start here. We decided after looking at the cute little beach house that we would stay here. It was cheap, cheerful and had a mozzie net.
Ventured down the beach and there were loads of dead fish, squid and crabs everywhere. We thought there may be a sewage problem as the sea didn’t look particularly inviting. We thought later on after talking to people they might a result of the fishing village discards.
Ate lunch at a Lonely Planet beach cafe ran by locals. Very cheap. Plastic chairs and plastic plates. A cute Labrador puppy ran around the place and sat on Russ feet.
Had dinner and went to find a bar for a cheap drink on the seafront. Everywhere was so quiet, no music or atmosphere but I suppose this as low season. Ended up in Wax bar- not many people around but the music was loud and it filled up with local youths later. We bumped into Canadian man and his Dutch friend and ended up having a laugh and filling the table with empty beer bottles til 3am.
The next day we gatecrashed a 5star hotel and lounged by the pool. We bought drinks and had the cheapest lunch we could find. It was so peaceful. Mui Ne isn’t in season at the moment, whereas Nha Trang was. Carrying on our 5 star day we went to Sankara for dinner http://www.sankaravietnam.com/ . They guy there talked at us for 20 mins and told us how the sea is eroding a lot of the coastline and they lost part of the restaurant 2 years ago.
We booked a half day trip for the next day to see the Fairy Stream, Fishing Village, Sand Dunes, Red Canyon and more sandunes for the sunset which we did by jeep. Had a great day. Went for dinner at Jibes and bumped into the Londoner Steve, who as on our bus and also staying at the same place so we joined him for dinner and had a few mojitos which ended up with TJ having a go on the Kite Surfing swing and getting everyone else to have a go!
The bus to Saigon was booked for 14:00 the next day, we really love it in Mui Ne beach but look forward to moving onwards and upwards.
Best food: TJ- Sankara- crab cakes and the local cheap eat: noodles at the Kite Surfing School
