We are currently in southern Laos in a place called the 4000 Islands, a group mud flats and sand dunes in the middle of the Mekong just before the Laos Camodian border. We're on an island called Don Det where the high street is made up of 100 metres of mud road which is flancked by a cluster of wodden bars and guesthouses which back over the river on stilts that... well. lets just say they don't appear to have building regs. over here. The main traffic on the street consists of chickens, dogs, cats, goats and occaissionally the local or a backpacker. There are a couple of make shift grocers (somebody's front room) to buy essentials but there is not much to do here. The water is straight from the Mekong whether its for washing or showering and you can;t help but feel like there is contantly a layer of mud, sweat, sunscreen and deet all over your skin. But it is so peaceful and picturesque that you can't help like the place and the people and you soon find yourself adjusting to the pace of life here. Going for lunch and then swinging in a hammock over the river whilst reading a book or watching the sun set is the highlight of the day. Saying that we went Kayaking yesterday down stream to some waterfalls and saw some very rare Irrawady Dolphins which was a agreat day out.
We move on to Northern Laos tomorrow and will be travelling for nearly 24hours so we are resting up today with little else to do.
