San Pedro de Atacama to Uyuni Salt Flats
Dry desert, baron landscape & more dust than you find in a Dyson, mix that up with an altitude height of 4000+ metres… and that's just the Bolivian Immigration. We set off from San Pedro, Chile for a 3day tour across the Bolivian desert to the infamous Salt Flats. We were really lucky to get a good group of 10 other people, with quite a few Brits. There was a lot to be said about our 4x4 though, as at every opportunity the tour guide was under the bonnet or changing a tyre.
After a day of Lagunas, Flamingos, Hot Springs and Geysers (spitting sulphur that smelt worse than Easton's trumps after a curry) we headed for the world's most remote hostel. We were told when we booked the trip, that the first nights' accommodation was going to be really cold, basic and have no showers, but I'm sure that they always under sell it so that when you get there its slightly better than expected.
Unfortunately a couple of the girls on the trip got really bad altitude sickness, so the following morning the group spilt into two as they headed off to the doctors. For us more Lagunas, Flamingo's and bare dry desert…everything started to look the same. However then we came across the Rock Valley and an active Volcano, where Easton played with the perspective smoke photos. On that night we stayed somewhere really cool… The Salt Hotel, where literally everything is made from salt including the table, chairs, beds etc. After a very salty dinner we introduced our foreign friends to the game of s*** Head, bless Laura she lost 90% of the games even though she was one of the ones who knew how to play!
That night Easton became really ill with Gastroenteritis and had less than an hour's sleep before waking up at 4am to catch the sunrise - to which the tour guides all night party made him sleep in and sunrise was cancelled - that was all good for East though as he could sleep for another couple of hours. We then re-awoke at 7.30 to complete the final day of our tour - The Salt Flats… crystal white desert as far as your eyes could see! East had his imagination cap on even though he was still sick, so with camera in hand we carried out our photo shoot of perspective shots! It was really addictive. Then out of nowhere a Cactus Island appeared which was equally amazing.
We finished the tour in Uyuni & caught the 1st white-knuckle bus ride straight to La Paz, honestly it turned your stomach more than the Alton Towers Oblivion and didn't stop for 12 hours!! Another great nights sleep! Ha ha
