We spent 3 nights in Kyoto, two in a guest house and one in a traditional ryokan. Kyoto was quite traditional feeling compared to Tokyo. The temples (there are 2000 temples and shrines in Kyoto) were awe-inspiring, and the neighborhoods felt like true little residential areas versus the mini-metropolis districts in Tokyo. Similar to Tokyo, our long days of walking and exploring were fueled by careful - and sometimes worrisome - eating adventures :)
It was really great getting to meet up with our friend Wes for a beer on our last night. There's nothing like seeing a friendly, familiar face when you've been thousands of miles from home for weeks!
Highlights:
- Sanjusangendo Hall - no photos allowed, but what a beautifully spiritual place.
- Golden Temple (Kinkakuji Temple) - it really is as golden as the photos!
- Torii Gates - Fushimi Inari Shrine) - the orange gates shown in the photos
- Diana's 1-hour kanji translation project to confirm that Charley was NOT, in fact, drinking rubbing alcohol. It was just cheap Shochu. :)
- Surprise Sansho No Mi - little green berries that appeared in our food - when they made our tongues go numb, Charley just thought it was odd that his tongue went numb from the bitterness but kept chomping them down, while I (diana) was convinced I was having an allergic reaction. Our server thought it was hilarious. :)
This was another city that felt like we were wishing for another several days to explore.
Off to Cambodia....
