Last night in Bangkok...
Finally decided to head to Khaosan Rd via China Town where we realised there was a huge carnival for Chinese New Year, with stalls, music and LOTS of people. Everyone seemed to be waiting for a parade to start and the streets were packed. We had a wonder round but after a few hours there was still no parade. The place continued to fill with more and more people so you could hardly move and it got even hotter and more humid. We ended up walking through lots of food stalls where they mainly sold fish! The highlight for Katy (other than being ambushed and outflanked by fish) was when we squeezed by one particular man just as he decided to hold one nostril and with a huge force snort through the other one all over her arm.. Delightful!! HazMat suits had to come out out and a full decontamination procedure followed.
About 8pm we gave up on the procession and went in search of a Tuc Tuc to take us to Khaosan Road. It didn't take long before one spotted the sweaty harassed looking westerners and did a quick u turn to grab us.. Mr Sackol only just delivered us alive to Khaosan Rd which was everything we hoped for, noisy, tacky, lots of cheap drink and lots of other travellers. We resisted buying Havaianas, handbags, T-shirts and wallets and sat and had a much needed beer and a Hubbly Bubbly, followed by a Bucket.. Few more beers... More Hubbly Bubbly... Which all look the edge off the giant rat that ran under our feet and the trays of scorpions, grasshoppers and fat maggot-looking things on lolly sticks that were put under our noses every few minutes... Who would eat them!??
Jon decided he wanted to meet some travelling friends and within minuets we were joined by 2 Canadian girls who bombarded us with advice on where to go and what to see, (including an amazing Elephant sanctuary in Chang Mai) closely followed by 4 Brits who'd just arrived from the airport, an 18yr old couple from OZ and another Aussie who had been in Thailand 8 months. The scorpion lady returned and unlike us the other Brits ordered a couple and munched them up.. Then picked the legs out of their teeth.. Apparently they taste of bacon. Nice!!!
Separating Jon from Khaosan Rd (apparently his new favourite place ever!?) and his new OZ friends was a very sad and difficult moment but they promised to meet up at the Full Moon Party in Koh Phagnan which made it only slightly easier to leave the bar. "Let's get a tattoo", "I want to drink some snakes blood" and "let's live on this road" were then pretty much on a loop on the taxi ride home.
