Having to catch the 8am train after our alcohol fuelled night on Khaosan road was a struggle! Quick breakfast at the hotel restaurant where neither of us could really stomach much on account of my hangover and Katy's ridiculously strict food criteria (hasn't been washed, isn't fish, been near fish or smell of fish). Back to the hotel room to finish packing our backpacks which had somehow doubled in size followed by a hasty checkout and a quick march to the metro. 15 minutes later, dripping with sweat in the morning heat and with 15 mins to spare we made it to Bangkok railway station and boarded our 2 carriage train to Chumphon. It wasn't exactly state of the art but we didn't have to share it with any goats or chickens either and at least it had AC which worked for an hour or so. It was kind of like being on a plane. The seats were fairly comfortable but a little wobbly and had drop down trays that I attempted to eat what they served for lunch (Katy outright declined) - it was rice with 3 jelly type things on top and a medley of some other unidentifiable things. The other passengers we shared the carriage with were a mix of European travellers and mostly Thai locals. After a few hours the scenery began to change becoming noticeably more green and mountainous. A total of 7 hours and some snoozes later and we finally pulled into Chumphon, feeling as fresh as milk that's close to its use by date and has been sitting in the sun!
