Blog 6 - Ait-Bennadahou 6 Sep 09, MOROCCO
Writing this blog sitting in our tent with a blazing storm outside! It was scorching hot when we set off this morning on our way North to Marrakech. We diverted to see Ait… and, as it was so hot, decided to stop off at a guest house recommended by Lonely Planet that had a swimming pool. After putting up the tent & doing a bit of admin, that mainly consisted of trying to get the sand out of everything (a reminder from our sand storm in the Sahara), we threw ourselves into the pool. From the pool I heard the distinctive sound of a cork being withdrawn from a bottle of wine… these sounds seem even louder when deprived of alcohol for weeks!I rushed into the bar & found that we were in the first place so far that serves alcohol over Ramadan!Bliss - something to do with it being owned by a French couple methinks! So, a bottle of rose and a tuna sandwich later we decide that it was time to 'retire' to the pool. This thought was rudely interrupted by a loud clap of thunder… swiftly followed by the first enormous drop of rain.We swiftly retired to the tent, thinking that it would be a short summer storm.Oh how wrong we were… the thunder didn't stop for 2 hours. 4 hours on & it is still pouring down & our pretty campsite has turned into a basin of mud.I nipped out a few minutes ago to get the computer... having walked 5 steps my flip-flops had turned into 6" platforms! So here we are, wondering what to do for supper (we have a bag of nuts here, so that will probably have to suffice!).

You will be pleased to know that we survived the night... huge storm meant that we had to get up in the middle of the night to lash everything down & get plastered in mud from head to toe in the process!
After Ait Bennadahou we headed north for Marakesh... what a great place. Lively, exciting and a real exotic feel to it. Amazing souks, street stalls, street performers going on until late at night. Shopping is curtailed sadly, due to lack of space... but a shoppers paradise!
Yesterday we had the misfortune to go into Casablanca (searching for the Mauratanian Consulate, which no longer exists) - don't bother. Crowded, hot & no redeeming featured that we found anyway. So now we are in Rabat. Been to the Mauratanian Embassy this morning, surrendered our passports and now waiting till tomorrow PM when they say they will be ready..... we'll see!
Keep all the comments coming - it's great to hear from everyone. Don't forget to see our vids on YouTube - search for taniyadennison or CaT's Itchy Feet & you will find them.... please ignore my face.. living in a tent does not do your looks much good at all!
