first time been able to get to a computer. so here goes.. we arrived in guatemala city 11 days ago was a pretty scary place and was left with no bags as they didnt come off the plane so we then jumped in a taxi to get out of the city we got stopped by police ina taxi and had to show them our passports was not a good start. we got to antigua 45 mins away which is an old colonal town with ancient buildings destroyed by earthqakes and nestled between 3 volcanoes, we stayed at a little hostel called jungle party lodge yet to discover a week before our arrival the place got robbed at gunpolnt and every one got tied up. so we went for 3 days with out our bags and had to live in the same clothes..yeps we were smelly! The 2nd night we were there i had a kinda fit which i never experienced before was horrible but cordelia looked after me and got me home and i slept for a good 15 hrs. Day 3 or 4 we climbed volcan pacaya 2600km high the most active volcanoe in central america, i got a horse half way up heheh was still not feeling great from the day before. We reached the top and saw lots of lava the heat was immence and burnt our feet through our shoes, we took marshmellows up there but too dangerous to get our balance and couldnt roast them.On our way up it sounded like a water fall but it was the volcanoe erupting..was pretty awesome. We reached the bottem and gave the kids some glitter pens and sweets his little face was a picture made my day. We met some nice people in antigua and just chilled watched movies and ate pizza on oue last night.
Day 5 we caught a flight from guatemala city to flores in north guatemala. Where we started our volunteering at the arcas animal sanctuary rehabilating animals that have been abused or sold on the black market. We had a tour of arcas and was introduced to all of the animals including a jaguar, spider monkeys, howler monkeys, deer, pigs, crocs, turtles, parots, macaws, baby armadillos, margay cats which were soo pretty and some other animals with wierd names. So work began straight away i was assigned pen 11 which was 18 parots in quarintine and also helped dee with pen 12 the injured parots and a cheeky toucan that pecks people on the head. Not many people liked the birds but mine were really sweet and i kinda liked them i even got a wolf whistle from them every morning heheh! There were birds there with only one foot and monkeys that had been in quarintine for 3 yrs and the jaguar will never be released which is quite sad. I got bit by one animal in quarintine called a possoti i was feeding it and it kept biting me i tried to get it away with the broom but it kept coming for me eeeek the other possoti in there was trying to pull the biting possoti off of me which was sweet so there was one evil one and one nice one. We met some really nice people at the sanctuary in the evening we treked 10 mins through the jungle to a little old ladys house where she has a make shift bar and puts music on for us. Scorpians and gekos were regular guests in the volunteer house along with bats that fly above yr head when in bed. We had 4 tranchular nests outside the house they were kool and we teased them out with sticks at night. We attennded the animals 3 times a day and were normally finished by 2.30 in the afternoon so most people went to swim at the floating dock where alligators lived but it was soo hot people didnt really care. I went for a quick dip but then the knowing that alligators lived in the lake it freeked me a bit so just cooled off in there quickly before getting back on dry land. There were tons of wild dogs at the sanctuary close to death were so skinny and infested with so many flees and a few od them with only one eye was sad to see. The meals were ok here and consisted of tortillas rice beans most days. Myself and dee decided to cut the stay short and was in need of some sun sea sand after quite a tough week. So 8 of us headed for Tikal which is a place with ancient mayan ruins where the mayan worshiped the sun god and sacrifised people and stayed in a nice hotel with a pool in the jungle, we played games in the pool saw wild monkeys and had a nice meal in the evening. Myself and dee then woke at 4am to head to Belise. First of all the bus left with out us so we had to pay a a taxi to catch up with the bus, we recahed the coach and hopped on and crossed the boarder our coach broke down a couple of times and the bus driver told every one to get off and start pushing so the coach got started again but then started spitting out really hot water from the gear box and burnt mine and dees legs as we were sat on the fron seat..i was a bit grumpy at this point as i also had a huge swallon eye that i couldnt open as a mosquito had bit me there the night before. 4 miles from belise city the coach was beyond no return so we had to pay another taxi to get us to the water taxi. we jumped on the water taxi 'a speed boat' and headed for caye caulker a bay island seeing the pristine clear water lifted our spirits and couldnt wait to reach the island. we found a kool little cabana called bellas its like a posh shed with a downstairs where i am and dees bed is upstairs we have a communal kitchen, cable and use of 2 canoes at the back. This place has a great vibe and they speak like this mon and say ladeeez... total different contrast to guatemala i feel much safer here. There is so much sea food here it is amazing and were addicted to the shrimp on skewers for 5 belisen dollars off of a local man called jack on the beach! We met some english guys and american girls and had a fun first night went into a few bars then chilled on the pier drinking and watching the amazing fish we saw an eagle ray, cuttle fish or squid and some huge fish which we cant quite decide what they are some of us think shark some of us think mari mari but they are so kool and come right into the shallows at night. Last night our frinds from the sanctuary in guatemala arrived so we just met at the beach and got some local rum and sat on the pier again watching the fish. The stars are awesome out here too and loads of shooting stars. well were off to get some shrimp for brekkie and hit the beach speak soon love love x
