Up early again today, bus from Cusco to Puno at 7am. We meant to arrive Puno about 4:30pm but not meant to be. There is some sort of strike in Juliaca so we had to take a different route which would add 2 hours onto our trip. Not a problem as this bus stopped at different sites along the way and stopped for lunch.
First stop was the "Sistine Chapel of South America" a Baroque church of San Pedro Apostol de Andahuaylillas 41km west of Cusco. This chapel was amazing, the frescoes on the ceiling and paintings on walls were stunning. Carved timber and walls completely painted and gold everywhere, absolutely beautiful - was not allowed to take any photographs inside though.
Second stop was a pre-inca ruin which was built with volcanic rock and adobe bricks.
Third stop was lunch and there were alpaca there, they are so weird looking almost Rastafarian with all that long hair - will load a photo on my site.
Fourth stop was the highest point of road crossing Andes between Cusco and Puno, this also denoted the county line. Elevation is 4100m.
Then we had an unscheduled fifth stop thanks to the alternative route and the road that we travelled on was basically under construction, bus got bogged and was very close to tipping so we all got off and watched for half hour or more while driver got bus out and on road again (see photo).
Arrived Puno 7:45pm, straight to hotel and eat then bed as early start again tomorrow. Puno was freezing!!!
