San Francisco
On our second day in the States we flew up to San Francisco, where we stayed for four nights. While we were there we walked up a lot of hills, rode the cable cars (which you could freely hang out the side of if you were standing - what happened to public liability in America???) and visited Alcatraz. We went to the cable car museum, which was probably the best value for money thing we did on the whole trip (it was free). The museum was built around the working parts of the cable car system - you could look down onto the wheels that were actually running the cables that the cars attach themselves to. It was all very fascinating.
On our last day in San Fran we caught the ferry across to Sausalito, where we had lunch. We were both feeling exhausted from our sightseeing spree, so we ordered Iced Coffees with our meal. Imagine our confusion then, when the waiter brought out two plastic cups with black liquid and ice in them and put them in front of us. We were about to start explaining that we didn't order Cokes when the penny dropped. Upon taking a tentative sip of our drinks our fears were confirmed: Iced Coffee. Coffee with ice in it. Ahh, America. We tried putting sugar in the offending beverages in order to make them drinkable, but somehow that seemed to make them taste even worse. In the end we finished our meal and left as quickly as possible!
After that little affair we caught a bus to the Golden Gate Bridge. Or at least fairly close to the Golden Gate Bridge. We'd asked the bus driver to let us off before the bridge as we wanted to walk across, and he let us out in the middle of an intersection (literally in the middle of the road) about a mile from the bridge. We walked over the bridge towards San Fran, and I was amazed that the guard rails on the bridge were only just over a metre high (again, public liability America?). We walked right around to Fisherman's Wharf, which we've calculated to be around 9 miles - it was a very long walk, even by our standards!
