Or hostel included breakfast was simple but nice and I enjoyed an exotic fruit salad! We slept well and thankfully our 2 Korean room mates don't snore - but all they seem to do is play games on their laptops! So all I could hear falling asleep was a constant and rapid clicking!
We jumped in the car and I drove us north to Mossman Valley. I bought 2 shuttle tickets for $6 each and an aboriginal drove us up the the gorge. The sun was out and it was lovely. The rainforest was similar to the ones we saw in NZ, but not quite the size or heat of the Amazon. Also there were very few animals/birds/creatures here. We took a walk up to a large swing bridge and took done nice photos at the view points. There was a section of the gorge you could swim in which Garth convinced me to do and it was very cold at first but very pleasant once in! There were lots of 20/30cm brown fish all around us! I didn't think I'd ever swim in a river in crocodile country!!!
I then drove to the Daintree river where we caught the ferry across for $23. We just drove on, sat in our car while the ferry was pulled along by ropes across the river and drive off! It was easy!
We were really into the rainforest now with warning signs for cassowary's (giant Jurassic ugly birds) crossing every few kilometres! A lovely windy road took us along the coast with ocean and beaches to our right and dense rainforest to our left!
We stopped at the Alexandra lookout and took some photos - what a lovely view (although it had clouded over).
I then drove up to cape tribulation where we enjoyed our sandwiches on the beach. The beach itself was stunning (shame it wasn't sunny) there were a handful of tourist on the beach but most of them stayed near the car park. I was very (and happily) surprised about how few tourists there were all day! We walked right up to the mangrove trees growing out of the sea which I loved! We walked up to the view point for a few photos before walking along the sea right up to the end on the beach and the start of the next bay. We had the beach to ourselves! There were lots of crabs in the sand who had dug holes and put the excess sand in balls up on the beach and it made some amazing patterns! They almost looked like aboriginal paintings! The jungle was literally breaking out onto the beach, beseeching the ocean.
We then went to a billabong - or as Garth likes to call it a swim hole and Garth swung into the clear water! He loved it! I don't think either of us though we'd swim twice in a crocodile area!!
We stopped at the Marrdja Botanical Walk which was also very impressive. The walkway was raised over a swamp area in the rainforest, and the roots sticking out of the swamp were crazy! It was like a scene from a fantasy world in a movie!
I then drove all the way back to port Douglas back over the ferry while Garth slept. What a lovely day!
In the evening we had spag-toast for dinner and took a quick dusk walk up tithe dock and prepared for tomorrow.
