After 2 gorgeous days of over 35 degrees in Yosemite we set off for our 2nd destination Lake Tahoe. After a couple of hours of stinking hot driving along some country back roads and reservoirs we turned right at Jackson and headed up the 88 back into the Sierra Nevada.
The temperature dropped dramatically as we climbed through some stunning pine forests. The drive out of Carson Pass was spectacular as we passed Silver Lake.
We arrived at Tahoe Valley Campground on the south side of Lake Tahoe and Mrs T was decidedly unhappy about the absence of the lake or lake views. Just a bunch of trees, a lot of RV's and a grumpy Doberman Pincer parked across from us in a cage. Luckily all improved as the boys made instant friends with 2 lovely boys in the spot next to us, and we sat around the campfire having a few drinks.
All was forgotten as the evening festivities included the american tradition of S'mores - (biscuit, choc & marshmallow) over the campfire which Olly proceeded to wear all over his face.
The next morning we were totally blown away by the views of the coast road heading up the western shore to Tahoma. The fjord-like Emerald Bay is stunning and the road continues to wind it's way mutli milion dollar lakeside lodges - definitely somewhere we want to revisit in Winter.
Willy and Dad took a night hike with the local Rangers to hear about the local wildlife, Willy asked loads of smart questions although the question regarding any local Dingoe activities had the Rangers stumped.
When we woke up the next morning, rubbish from the Dumpster 50 feet away had been strewn around as a Mother bear and 3 cubs (witnessed reported) had a party in the bins.
The drive out (eastern shore) went past the Casinos and nearby ski resorts but soon got back into hot dusty highways as we headed through Carson City, Reno and headed North.
Our overall impression of Tahoe was a stunning lake and coastal roads, surrounded by the ususal average tourist offerings. Would love to come back and check it out in Winter, glass of red, 4 foot of snow and a lakeside lodge view. Book it in!
