Thursday was Milla's birthday - happy birthday Milla Moo!! We had a fantastic day at Elephant Nature Park. I specifically chose this 'elephant experience' as the lady who runs it has won heaps of awards for the way that she looks after the elephants. I really wanted us to enjoy the day rather than feel uneasy about what we were seeing and doing. Of 35 elephants there, there were none in chains and only one called Trouble Boy with a bell around his neck because he's a bit of a wildcard. They all had their own mahout and were able to roam freely over huge big forest areas and a river. They were all rescued elephants who had been removed from less than ideal situations and then basically given lots and lots of love and care.
Of course they need to make money to look after all of the elephants so a tourist experience was still in order! By the end of the day we'd all fed, bathed and stroked elephants and spent lots of time just generally hanging out with them. It's possible that a couple of us may have enjoyed several long conversations with elephants also. It was awesome.
It was Milla's choice for dinner so it was McDs fries and cheeseburgers all round, followed by Starbucks carrot cake for a birthday celebration. By the end of the day we were completely shattered but it was a happy-tired that came from a great day's experience.
