Day three in Dublin was just as full. We started out by going on a tour of Trinity College, which is SUPER old and houses the Book of Kells, which is one of the oldest surviving copies of the Gospel from Ireland, it was written and drawn in the early hundreds. Our tour guide through the college was the picture of the pompous Brit. He had the stereotypical accent with the wingtip shoes and casually drapped scarf. It was a really neat college and I enjoyed the old library with the Book of Kells and other old documents.
After Trinity College we went on to the National Museunm of Ireland, which was super cool. I even got to see the bog bodies, found in Ireland's peet bogs that I saw a several very interesting discovery channel shows on, nerdy I know but it was really neat.
After the national museum we headed to St. Patrick's cathedral. It was a very interesting very old church with lots of history and beautiful chapels!
After St. Patrick's we headed back to our hostel and then went to the General Post Office which was one of the hot spots for the Easter rebellion. That night we went out to the pub again and I discovered they have pear cider, it's just fermented pears and water, so I can drink it- yay!!
The next day we headed out to Cork. It was like a 5 hour bus ride, mostly because the bus never broke 50 Km/h. I really like Cork. It's super pretty and seems much cleaner and Irishy, if that makes sense. It's cute and quaint. Our hostel is also super nice, we have a room to ourselves too, which is nice. We got in pretty late so we just walked around and found a nice (cheap) restaurant to eat at and then crashed.
Today, we started the day by heading out to Blarney Castle which was super awesome!!!! I got to kiss the Blarney stone!!! There was so much more to Blarney castle than just the stone though. It had beautiful grounds and there were a bunch of rooms that we got to walk in and read about what used to be in there. It was raining really hard the whole time so we got shower while walking the grounds. :.)
After Blarney we took the short bus ride back to Cork and had a quick lunch. Then we headed out to find an old fort that still stands along the river in Cork but on the way we ran into this neat old church and had a look around there. I think it was called St. Finn. It had a very neat old graveyard next to it, although it seems morbid, I think old graveyards are very interesting so I liked looking around there. We eventually found the fort but couldn't find the entrance so we just looked around the outside.
We then went on to the Cork public museum, which had very neat artifacts from the revolutionary war and the civil war and other times in Cork's history.
We had a bit of trouble finding the Cork Gaol (jail) which we wanted to see next and spent quite a time walking around before we found it. Once we did, I thought it was worth the wait, it was not as old as Kilmainlam that we saw in Dublin but it had a very neat audio tour and wax figure presentations. Then we headed back to the hostel for supper and here I am writing my blog.... so that's what I've been up to. More to come later.
I will be headed back to Dublin tomorrow and then spending the night in the London Gatwick airport before flying to Helsinki, yay!
