Hi There!! :-)
I am now done with 3 awsome weeks trekking in Canada!
It was not very often i could use a computer, since we were mostly camping..
So I`ll just give you a summary here on what Ive experienced since last blog :-)
Day 1, Seattle to
Starting from seattle, we drove straight to Canada, in the van were a group of 13 trekkers and 1 guide! 2 from Denmark, 4 from Australia, 5 from England, 1 from Ireland and the guide from US. In the Trailer were our home for the next 21 days.. Tents, cooking equipment, wood, and coolers!
The first day we basically drove the whole day with only a few stops for lunch and a short walk.. When we arrived at our campsite that night, the rain was pouring down and were offered cabins, at first we were brave enough to decline, but after the Van got stuck in the wet mud and we were all standing under a tree freezing while the owner of the camp pulled the Van back on the road, we all agreed that cabins would be a great idea! After a cold dip in the Lake, we ate some dinner and went to bed.
Day 2
Another day of driving with just small stops for some scenic hikes. That evening we arrived at a campsite by Kicking Horse River, it was a big grass field for tenting and a cooking area with shelter from the rain, we learned how to set up our tents, and luckily it stopped raining! The dinner team made some dinner and we spent the evening by the campfire drinking hot chocolate:-)
Day 3
This day we were supposed to do white water rafting, but after a lot of snow melting and rain, the river was just too wild! So instead we went for a hike up to some big waterfalls. In the afternoon I used the wifi at the lodge while drinking coffe in a swing chair on the porch with stunning views of the Canadian Rockies!
As usual the day ended with dinner and campfire!
It was very cold and my sleepingbag was too thin for the Canadian spring weather, so even if I wore layers of clothes, I was freezing and did barely get any sleep!
Day 4
On the road again! On our way to Banff national park we stopped at a Wolf Ranch, saw some tame wolfs wolfs in general. Later on we also stopped at a beautiful clear blue lake, hiked around it before lunch. In the afternoon we arrived in Banff at a campsite with an amazing view of the snow caped mountains and the valley below. Set up our tents, and got organized! It was even colder there, it was actually the very end of the ski season there.. I had no other choice than to buy myself a thicker sleepingbag and a pair of gloves! I finally got some sleep that night:-)
Day 5
This day I hiked up to a mountain together with an australian couple, it was also a gondola going up there, so the top had a resturant full with tourists! But since it was still a lot of snow in the area and danger of avalanches, this was the highest trail open. It was snowing and windy up there, so I was happy to buy a hot coffe to drink with my lunch! On my way back I walked by a beautiful river in the valley into the town. After that it felt really good with a hot shower to warm up a bit! When your house is a tent and its around zero degrees, you really apreciate any warm place, if only for a little while:-) After dinner we enjoyed the warmth of the campfire!
Day 6
This morning the sun was shining, and a ate my bowl with cereal while letting the sun warm me up:-) We drove for an hour to see the famous Lake Louis, but unfortunately it was still frozen!! So we could not apreciate it as typically seen in postcards.. We did a nice hike up to a smaller lake further up and ate our lunch there below the wild rockies with the company of some cute squarrals! On our way back we stopped to see some more lakes, before we went to warm up in some hot springs back in Banff! We rented "historical swim suits" which was quite funny looking:-) After that we went to town to eat dinner out for a change, it was a luxury to be dry, warm an served food indoor!
Day 7
Last day in Banff I spent hiking up to a small mountain, doing laundry, reading and relaxing! Some people went rafting, but I thought it would be too cold, and I had alreade used my rafting money to buy a new sleeping bag:-) Anywas, it was good to chill out one day:-)
Day 8
Time to leave Banff and head over to the next Nationalpark, Jasper! 8.30 we had packed down our tents and were in the Van ready to kill some miles on the road! Finally this day we saw lots of black bears:-D Stopped 5 times on the road to take photos of the poor bears that were hungry from a long winter eating grass by the road. Stopped for a small hike to some nice river carved canyons. We were supposed to go for a glacier walk, but it was to early in the season.. So we just stopped do take some pictures on the edge of it.
On the road there were several times i got goosebumps all over, not because it was cold in the van.. but because of the BREATH TAKING scenery we were driving through!
When we got to Jasper, we put up our tents, made dinner and played some baseball to keep warm for a while! Then warming up around the campfire before putting on all layers of clothes and sleepingbags prepared for another night below zero!
Day 9
Hiking in Jasper! A beautiful day, warmest so far (18 degrees). Since the longest trails were closed because of snow or grizzly bears, we just drove around and did several small hikes around beautiful lakes in the valley. There were some snow on the trail, but leafs were sprouting and the air smelled just like spring at home:)
Marshmallows and music by the campfire before crawling into my two sleepingbags! Above zero degree that night, so slept quite good actually:)
Day 10
Halfway through the trip and getting used to sleeping and eating outdoor and hiking all day! Not freezing that much anymore and sleeping is not that difficult! This day was a "free day" so went to town, used internet at the library, ate lunch at a nice coffeeshop before doing a hike (is hard to resist hiking in a scenery like this!) we were gonna do a 8km loop, but another girl and I were talking to much and did not notice the signs, we got a bit lost at one point and ended up doing a bit more than 15km, but it was a nice walk to a pretty lake!
Day 11
Movin on again! Driving through more amaaazing nature:-) Arrived in Clearwater in the afternoon, got geared up in our canoes and paddled for 3 hours up clearwater lake! We got to a nice spot by the river where we put our tents up, got the campfire going and had chillidogs for dinner:-) Later on, our guide introduced us foreigners to " s'mores which is a sandwhich of graham crackers, chocolate/peanutbutter cup, grilled marshmallow and graham cracker on top! Incredible messy, but sooo yummy:-D no wonder the name..
When it got darker, we went for a paddle across the lake, so quiet and nice:-) Lovely to bee outdoor in the canadian backcountry!
Day 12
Slept in:-) that means we got up at 8.30! Ate my usual bowl of cereal with 2 cups of nescafe! Chat around the campfire before paddling across the lake to a nice beach, Unfortunately it was raining a bit, but our guide had a interesting lecture there. Back to our lake camp for lunch, and then we had to pack up our tents and paddle back to the Van.. Drove an hour to a guest ranch where we stayed for the night, even if ut was simple cabins with no electricity, it was lovely to sleep on a bed :-)
Day 13
Driving 8 hours from wells gray to Whistler! Did some shopping to fill up our coolers again, made dinner at camp and went to town for some hot tea and wifi!
Day 14
Slept in, laundry and wifi, yay:-) Some people in our group did bungi jumpin and the rest of us went to watch and take their pictures! It was from a bridge 53m above a river, I had always thought i would never do bungi.... but it didnt look that bad at all, I was tempted to go for it myself actually! So put that on my to-do list for my next travel;-)
After that I went for å long run on some of the mountain bike trails, was just perfect for running, exactly how i like it:-) After dinner at camp, I went to try "cows" which according to the aussies in my group is the world best ice cream place! Since I loooove ice cream, that was something i did not wanna miss:-)
We played some cards in a resturant before going back to sleep at the camp.
Day 15
The first morning that it actually rained when we woke up! Lucky so far... I was reluctant to get out of the tent and make breakfast and put our tents down in the rain! But it was alright once we got started and we got it done quickly:-) 5 of us were brave enough to go for a hike in the rain, rest of the group went into town for starbucks!
After the hike, we drove a couple of hours to get to Vanvouver!
Once in Vancouver I enjoyed a hot shower in the hostel:-) Went for a walk down to a lookout by the wharf and got back to the hostel just in time before the rain started pouring down! Then we had a drink and watched hockey at the bar in the hostel. Later on the whole group went out for dinner and a few drinks at a club after that, we all enjoyed some urban life after camping for 2 weeks!
To be continued... :)
