Happy days :-)
Friday I had one of my craziest scuba dives so far:-D It was almost as wild as skydiving!
We drove a couple of hours by car in to a forest, then put on our scuba gear an walked to a cavern/cenote called "the pit" which is like 100m deep, with freshwater the first 30m and then saltwater.. We jumped 6m down into the cave with all the scuba gear on, which was a bit exciting on its own. Then with our flash lights ready, we started swimming down in to the cave..We went down until we got to where the freshwater and saltwater meet, called "helocline", on top of it was a layer of sulphur which makes it look like underwater fog. At that point, the only thing I could se was a part of the tank of the diver in front of me! That was around 33m down, then we started ascending slowly up while looking at all the beautiful lime formations of stalactites and stalagmites We could then see the helocline lie beneath us as smoke in the water and far above us the sun was shining in to the entrance of the cave giving it a beautiful colour. It was like being in a science fiction movie of some kind!
After that we drove a bit further to dive in some cavern system, it was more shallow, like 7 m only, we got into one cenote and swam inside the tunnels to get to a couple of other cenotes. I was a bit worried that I would be a claustrophobic in a fairly narrow tunnel under water, with no near exit to the surface! But it was just very exciting, and I concentrated on keeping my buoyancy right and moving without bumping into to the all the beautiful stalagmites.
The water was perfectly clear and there was actually tiny fishes there, when I pointed at them with my flashlight, it made a big shadow on the roof of the cave:) when we got to some other cenotes, we surfaced for a little while, and saw lots if bats hanging there sleeping. We made a loop in the cavern system and back to the same cenote where we started.
I were so excited afterwards that I was shaking a bit:-) On our way back we stopped at a restaurant for a real tasty Mexican lunch!
Saturday I spent on the beach with a big group of people from the hostel, we had lots of fun in the waves, building sand castles and just enjoying the sun:-)
Sunday I went to a place called Playa del Carmen, for a day trip to get away from Cancun.
Today i will go to a place called Tulum to see some Maya ruins by the beach :-)
Hasta luego:-)
