Sue and Pete's Tank crawl take 3 2015
It's Saturday morning and as we left Thunder Bay the town was fairly quiet. The locals were doing the usual weekend things; brunch, walking and some were racing RC cars around a cool track with jumps.
The freeway heading NE was a good road but the speed limit was only 90kph! After yesterday's citation Pete stuck to it but we were overtaken by everyone even a greyhound bus lol All along the rod there are warning signs, moose on the loose sort of thing. No sign of moose today so the signs were seemingly just mocking our desire to see moose. One of the many stops of the day was at Rossport. There's a gorgeous beach there, I had a bit of a paddle in the lake, cold but not Tekapo cold. We stopped into Marathon for petrol and checked out Pebble Beach. The "pebbles" we're huge! The wind was whipping the water up and the waves were bigger than we get at Redcliffe on Moreton Bay. The town itself was a bit lacklustre, small houses most with skidoos parked by the house. Not far out of Marathon Pete spotted a baby black bear grazing by the road. We went back and watched it for sometime as it romped about. At one point it climbed a few feet up a power pole to get a better look at us, deciding we were only armed with cameras it went back to its grazing til a big truck went past and it scampered back off into the forest. We were talking to a couple earlier in the day and they said they'd been talking to another Aussie couple who'd been here five weeks and not seen any wildlife; my reply had been they weren't looking too well and the bear sighting would seem to prove that. In half that time we've seen a bear, elk, bison, big horn sheep, moose, prong horn deer, Eagles incl a huge bald eagle today, geese, hummingbirds, prairie dogs, squirrels and chipmunks. A fairly small town, White River, claims to be the place the Winnie the Pooh stories all began. In 1914 a soldier based there bought a bear cub which he then took with him when he deployed to Europe as their mascot. He named her Winnie after his home town, Winnipeg. He left her in the care of London Zoo while fighting in France and she ended up there for 20 years and that's where AA Milne and his son Christopher fell for Winnie and the stories were born. When the road took us away from Superior we were in pine forests with rivers and dozens of smaller lakes most of which looked like prime moose territory. We got to Wawa at about 5.30 and looked for accommodation. It's not much of a town with little to recommend it unless you're into giant plaster geese lol. Many motels had the no vacancy signs out, others were pretty run down which we can accept but not for $100 a night for a very basis room! The last one we tried at had hummingbirds flitting about which were gorgeous. We decided if necessary we'd drive to the Soo but hoped for a reasonable wee place along the way. The highway is littered with closed down hotels, restaurants, stores and motels. The few motels that remain open are seriously shabby We were treated to a stunning sunset over the lake, just beautiful. In the end we drove to Saulte St Marie and found a very reasonable motel for the night.- comments
