We set off this morning after breakfast to check out the 45 or so minutes of coast we missed last night in the dark. Of course as usual the hour and a half round trip took us waaaay longer with all the stops here and there and we didn't get back to our hotel til after 5pm
Just a little out of town we came to the breeding area for elephant seals. This time of year it's just the kids resting up while the adults are out at sea for a few months. They were there in their hundreds, mostly crashed out on the sand doing little more than lazily flick sand into themselves with their flippers when they got too hot. Now and then a couple of them would stir enough to assert themselves in battle, no harm done though as they're so young they don't yet have the wicked teeth the adults use to defend their place in the pack. We checked out all the beaches at the official rookery vista point and again headed north, we'd not gone too far when we spotted more close to the road and of course we had to stop. There was a large culvert connecting the ocean side of the road to the other where brackish water collected. The guys here were swimming between the two sides of the road lazily rolling in the water pausing now and them to snack on sea weed or try sneak attacks on the sea birds that were paddling about.
At one point in the road the waves were so huge they were crashing over the road. We stopped and checked out a few places, did some walks and generally poked our noses into the stretch of road we missed last night.
All along the road we kept, like yesterday, seeing a mob of cyclists all in the same Lycra. Almost back into town we checked out the local beach and found the meeting place of the cyclists as they checked in for the night. Turns out they're a bunch of produce workers raising money ($3000 each) to put salad bars in schools. We chatted to some of them and got the info, tonight it was on the local news too.
