They say things will look better in the morning and today that's certainly true. While it's still cloudy it's much lighter clouds interspersed with some sizeable patches of clear blue skies. It's still cool, hovering between zero and 5C with a little snow here and there still on the ground from overnight falls.
We set off on the Alaska Hwy, heading north. A small detour took us to KIskatinaw Provincial Park complete with an interesting curved wooden bridge.
We went through some beautiful scenery, rivers, lakes and spectacular hill country. Much is rural farming land but the small towns are all about oil and gas exploration. Here and there we passed the necessary evils of power stations, ugly belching things marring the otherwise pristine vistas.
Back into forests it was once again an endless winter wonderland, picture perfect Xmas card images but with the sky getting clearer all the way :-)
There were a lot of "RV" parks which were not much more than collections of dongas for the workers on the oil and gas projects. We are assuming they rent them but they could well be supplied by the companies as part of their contracts. Most of the motels in the towns, including Dawson Creek where we stayed last night, look to be rented out long term to workers too. We passed few regular cars, just about all the traffic is either work utes or trucks.
We stopped a couple of times, once for a snow fight, apparently. I thought we were stopping for a leg stretch but had snow balls thrown at me, cheers babe cos it wasn't cold enough lol Pete scrunched snow into big compressed balls to top up the ice in our drinks esky.
We found a pull off with a fab mountain view and stopped for lunch. Zero facilities like most of this road but we managed with a suitcase laid down in the back as a table to make some sandwiches. It was icy cold with a chilly breeze whipping around but we managed.
About 2pm as we entered the northern Rockies management area it hit the days expected high of 9C. The skies were blue, totally void of cloud and very little snow remained.
Fort Nelson; the first 10k's into town was all all fuel storage facilities, wood chipping facilities & timber yards before we hit town. Not that much of a town but our motel was ok. That was until we tried to get on the net, big drama, changed our room and even then still only able to connect with the iPhone and iPad. Pete's laptop never got to get on frustrating the hell out of him :-(
We went out of town hoping to see the northern lights but like last night the cloud cover foiled us. We should be in the zone still for the next 2-3 nights so fingers crossed for then. If all else fails there's always the Alaska cruise......
