We had a pretty bad nights sleep. The person in the room above us watched TV til 3.30 all the while stomping around. No idea how they did it but they were then up at six to do some more stomping before finally heading out but it was too late for us to go back to sleep.
As we left Canmore we pulled into a servo to put air in the tyres & across the road, outside a pub there were 20 or so bikers gearing up for a day on the road. The cop shop was across the road, poor Campbell would've had a hernia lol
On the road from Canmore this morning it was plains to the horizon in the East and to the distant snow capped Rockies in the West. There were vast areas of golden wheat waiting to be harvested and great swathes of hay which had been cropped.
A huge wind farm was visible along a ridge in the distance running parallel to the mountains.
Here and there we saw signs of a quirky sense of humour, a small duck pond with a big boat parked as if ready to be put in it, a wooden sculpture in the classic three armed cactus which would look funny when covered in snow & a barn with a smile added to the top windows and central door so it looks like a big smiley face.
Over a rise and there spread out before us was Calgary, our first city since Denver nearly a week ago, not sure we'd missed them lol
Parking became a problem when the meters wouldn't recognise our credit cards, we have a little currency from last year but it took five minutes of searching for the safe, logical place I'd tucked it in Oz. Once we had it and paid for parking we set off to take a look around.
It's a vibrant city with a lot of parks and large scale public art. Lots of smokers! We picked up a stack of info from the info centre at the base of the Calgary Tower. A lot of people were sitting at the outside tables of eateries and pubs, enjoying the last of the warm days of summer, it's about 23C today.
There was a car commercial being filmed in the mall. Lots of action and even a special set paramedic on hand in case things went wrong.
There was a free concert in the mall and further along we thought we'd found another at a sound stage in a park with a water feature in front of the stage. People were standing in the water, arms raised then we clicked lol some sort of revivalist meeting!
On the way out of town 5 cop cars had 2 cars penned in, no idea what went down but it looked interesting :-)
Less than ten minutes from the city centre we came across the ski fields and jumps then the ice rinks from when the Winter Olympics were held in Calgary.
Just as quickly as we'd come upon the city we were leaving it far behind, heading west towards Banff & the Rockies, once more in rural Canada.
The rural scenery slowly gave way once more to mountains, forests and clear blue lakes.
Arriving in Canmore we shopped for supplies and checked out the local info centre to pay for and collect an annual parks pass.
Checking in at our hotel we found our reservation made three or more months ago had been given to someone else - how unusual! Marvin, was it you?? Instead of the reserved king room they wanted us to take a queen and were willing to halve the bill if we did so. We stood our ground and got a better than reserved room, king bed and a kitchenette :-) good outcome but again a bit of a drama we didn't really need.
All settled we set off for Banff. It's a lot bigger than I thought it would be, quite a city complete with a school, hospital etc It was very busy, slow crawling traffic and people everywhere.
We headed out pretty quickly and checked out the top of a hill that in winter is a ski field, we found a couple of families, one of elk, the other mountain long horn sheep. Back down on the flat we drove to Lake Minnewanka (I s*** you not lmao) a lovely spot and actually the loop road led to a couple of lakes, all very picturesque.
With the sun going down we decided to head back and relax, a few ciders, nibbles and a home cooked meal.
Tomorrow we hit Banff National Park for real :-)
