A ball tearer on the cards for today. From Guillestre to Valdeblore. 137kms plus 3500m of climbing makes this the toughest day of this years tour.
On the slate for today are 2 reasonably big Cols. Col de Vars and Col de la Bonnette. Both over 20km long and >1000m.
Hot forecast again, knowing that plus the route we decided to leave early today.
To get ahead of the pack Chris and Dave left 30mins before the rest of us.
As expected Col de Vars was a tough slog but the favourable morning timing made it not too hard. Col de la Bonnette was a different proposition. Adfter lunch in a little town called La Condamine, we started off towards the Bonnettte about 12:30.
24km climb ahead of us in the midday searing heat was not ideal. Never the less, the job had to be done. With the heat today, you just couldn't carry enough water so the roadside creeks and streams were really helpful to fill the bottle.
Ultimately, all the guys made it to the highest road point in all of Europe successfully.
Next was the 55km downhill followed by the nasty 7.5km climb up to our hotel in Valdeblore. By this time everybody was shagged.
Only 6 made it to the hotel.
Tough day.....very tough day. Everyone is stuffed. Last day tomorrow into NIce. We are all looking fiorward to the end of this gruelling week.
PS. Big party in town tonight down in the square.
