Claire & Steve's Excellent Adventure
Left Delhi this morning - what a relief! Huge culture shock as predicted but the place is truly manic and we have definitely been taken out of our comfort zone. Massive poverty but the people are still so polite and welcoming.
Good to see a bit of the countryside as we drove down to Agra, stopped off for a coffee and at a large Sikh temple. Arrived in Agra 5 hours later and staying in a good hotel with hot water which is good after the very cold shower last night! Had lunch on the roof terrace and headed off to Agra Fort - huge structure like a rabbit warren inside. It was the stronghold of the Moghul Empire and is pretty impressive - lots of baboons and parrots. Got our first glimpse of the Taj Mahal in distance and later went to see this from the banks of the river Yamuna. It was a wonderful sight to see the sun setting on it and we are looking forward to visiting again tomorrow at sunrise. Enjoyed our first cold beer in India back at the hotel after a car drive wacky races style through the streets of Agra!
Got up at 5.30 the next morning to walk to the Taj Mahal and see the sun rising over it. It was amazing and definitely has the wow factor. Really beautiful structure inside and out and a bit weird to know that we were there actually looking at one of the wonders of the world. Very peaceful in the ground and nice not to get hassled by guides and beggars.
We went to buy train tickets to go south into Goa and then Kerala for a couple of weeks. Looking forward to some wide open spaces!
