Claire & Steve's Excellent Adventure
We have now made it to Hong Kong after a long day of travelling - even had to do the running through Bangkok airport thing (or limping in Steve's case) to get our connecting flight. We can highly reccommend Thai Airlines - lovely food, free drink and nibbles and you even get a tropical flower arrangement each before you land!
HK airport was pristine and a world away from what we had just left. It was super efficient and speedy and unbelievably clean! Emma and Dan met us at the train station - it was really nice to get such a warm welcome on landing in a new country.
We headed to the flat where we would be staying and guess what.....the cars all obeyed the rules of the road and even stayed in their own lanes! HK by night is a mass of skyscrapers with twinkling lights perched on the many hills of the islands. We got to the flat and met the 2 cats - Oscar and Lang (not good for my nose!) before falling into bed exhausted.
Emma and Dan proved excellent tour guides over the next few days introducing us to the sights and negotiating their way through the many streets with ease. We visited the Man Mo Temple which is a tiny building surrounded by high rise apartment buildings. Huge coils of incense hung from the ceiling making it difficult to breath without inhaling the strong scent. Later we took the tram up the steep climb to Victoria Peak with the intention of getting the views over the city and harbour. Unfortunately it was a tad foggy and so the view extended only as far as the city skyscrapers - Dan and Emma assured us that there was life beyond the buildings!
We walked through some of the backstreet markets which was a real stomach turner. We couldn't identify some of what the traders were selling but it didn't look good! Basically you just chose what you wanted from the fish market and they pull it out of the tank and kill it right in front of you.....we even got to see the heart still beating which was delightful!
