Bula! This means 'Hello' in Fijian!
We didn't get off to the best start in Fiji sadly with our flight being delayed 14hrs. Luckily we were put up in the Hilton at LAX which wasn't too shabby and quite a treat compared to our Hostels. We met a really cool Aussie girl called Rachel who was also delayed, always nice to make friends!
After a cozy night we set off to try again but were delayed another 2 hrs. We eventually got underway with Pacific Airlines who kept the Fiji beer flowing to cheer us up (especially Steve!) We arrived in Nadi to a happy acoustic Fijian band and a humid environment, and finally felt like we were on a beach holiday. We arrived at our resort (thanks Phil and Bren for the timeshare!) which was a lovely spacious apartment and had a late dinner.
Our first day was spent taking the Bula bus (a hop on/hop off resort bus as there was 7 resorts on the man made island of Denarau) down to Denarau Port for brunch. We booked a tour to visit a secluded island for a day trip and then headed back to mooch by the pool and overlooking the beach and sea. We had some cocktails, mine called a Happy Fijian which read well but tasted foul! This was still nice though as was from a swim up pool bar. We also got involved with a Vonu tower of beer - 3 litres of local beer on tap for 10 pounds!
Each day the weather was quite predictable, starting off sunny and hot and by late afternoon the grey clouds headed in. The last few days gave us some pretty cool lightening storms which rumbled on through the nights.
Our trip to the island was definitely our highlight. We took the Oolalaa boat with a fun crew to our secluded island where we did snorkelling (the variety of sealife and fish was amazing! Some of the fish were a bit too friendly and started eating Steve's shorts!) We had our own private spot and had a BBQ and drinks and were taught lots about the benefits of a Coconut tree/fruit. The key thing people is if you are ever deserted on an island, find yourselves one of these as everything you need is there! Steve was able to borrow one of the crew, 'Superman's' guitar and got some inspiration for some songs. I happily paddled on the rocks looking at the fish and then we went for a final snorkel
On one of our last nights we went on a walk to the Port where we watched the sunset. We saw the crabs wandering across the beach. We then headed for a traditional Fijian dinner where we both got to try Kava, a non alcoholic drink which has a very relaxing effect.
We tried to watch the sunrise one morning but got eaten alive by mossies... not cool and sunrise was a bit rubbish! Sunset is far better and always nice when the resort band come out to play to it!
All in all, we loved Fiji but wish we could have travelled throughout the different islands as the people are so friendly and it is beautiful.
Until next time Fiji Vinaka (Thankyou)!
