Hi all,
We are now in Lake Louise and settled into our tempory room in the staff acomodation. We are in a room with another couple who moved in the day before us and then 2 lads live upstairs and have worked for about 10-12 months now.
They are all really fun and the room is no where near as nice as the hotel suits!!
We hired a car to take all our millions of bags up here, the car wasnt big enough to fit in our board bags so we had to leave them at the previous hotel to pick up later once we'd returned the hiore car, then take a trip on the bus (which we got a nice 50% discount on).
Lake louise is about a 40min drive from Banff.
On Monday the Orientation was going to begin for Rich, so I just dressed up smart so that I could give Human resources a nudge to hire me and see if i could speed up the process at all. Instead they asked if I'd like to attend the orientation, very glad because they only do it once a month and I didn't want to wait another month to be employed and receive all the benefits such as being able to set foot in the cafetieria.
The 1st day of orientation was sooooo boring because thyere was so much information to take in for hours on end (9-5), it everyone very drowsey. But at the same time it was very interesting. it was all about the history of the area, the national park, the hotel and the mountains and all the amazing wildlife you may see around here. lots of grizzley bears, I really want to see one, (not close up though), moose, elk, lynx and so on.
Today we've had a tour of the hotel and were told more about aboutr the hotel and a lot of it was repetition from yesterday. The tour was amazing but so confusing, so many secret passages and its a massive building, so stunning.
We looked in some for the various rooms too, they were amazing, the presentation suit was amazing they had Jim Carey there last valentines day staying in there and he'd proposed to his fionce/wife on the ice sculptures on the lake. The standars room is lovely too. .... and i get to clean them....
Last night we headed to the bar,it wasnt very busy when we wrre there and weren't up for a late one, just played some pool and had a couple of beers. the warned us that up here 1 drink is like drinking 3 with this altitude. Its about 6000 ft high.
Tonight we will be going for a few drinks with the couple in our room.
we have a final day of orientation tomorrow then it's into work on thursday/ beginning of our training in the various deptartments.
By the way, we can get you discount rates on raffles, fairmont and swiss hotel chain. Staff get rooms of about $60/70 and can get friends and family a room for about $160 rather than the $400/$600 on the cheapest room rate. The massive suite was about $4000 to stay in, madness, the veiws from the dining halls are beautiful, its such an amazing place.
Hope everyone is well!!!!!! we are happy and now we'll be earning too, staff accomodation is like being in uni halls again everyone is a great laugh and generally in their 20's age range.
Rich is just about to go ice skating on the lake I think i might join in too, not too expensive for skate hire.
