Into our second week now and loving every minute! Almost stopped with the constant sweating although still seem to be making good mosquito food!! Especially me, Matthews not too bad but they are eating me alive!!!
Since my last post we have left Kanchanaburi and travelled up to Chiang Mai. On route we spent a few days in Atuthaya which was a nice place, if a little quiet. We stayed at a place called Baan Lotus Guest House which was lovely. Clean, big rooms and overlooked a large pond. Saw a Monitor lizard in the garden, was about 5ft long and I'm rather glad I saw it from the safety of our room!!! My first though was it looked like a Comodo dragon but the locals soon put me straight.
Stray dogs definitely outnumbered tourists there and although we spent a lovely day doing a bicycle tour around the historic town with ruins and temples we decided to move on.
Next stop we took the train to Phitsanulok, the train was air conditioned and quite pleasant although felt a bit like a roller coaster and the food that was included was definitely different! We had a curry of some sorts which was a lot spicier than I'm used to, although was quite tasty which is much more than I can say for the "minced chicken soup" they also provided. Pretty sure it wasn't chicken and the soup tasted like mouldy dishwater...yuk!!!
Made it to Phitsanulok and didn't stay around too long, didn't see a single other tourist and the locals weren't as welcoming as the other places we had been. Stayed one night and quickly hopped on the bus to Sukothai.
Sukothai was lovely, we stayed at a lovely place called the 4T guest house which had a pool. Was very quiet tourist wise although a lovely German couple called Jens and Vicky turned up shortly after we did and we got on really well. Went for dinner both nights they were there and we took a Tuk Tuk to Sukothai historical park together where we cycled round looking at the ruins. Was a beautiful day until typically stuck miles from base the heavens opened and we found ourselves hiding under the shelter of a giant banana leaf tree with a local!
Needless to say we all got very wet but where else can you say you've taken a Tuk Tuk in a monsoon! Was actually quite exciting and a really enjoyable day! And to top it off we got back and jumped in the pool in the rain, was like taking a hot bath, beautiful!
We've recently taken a 6 hour bus journey up to Chiang Mai and luckily managed to get a room at Julie's which is great, it's really busy but was highly recommended and we can see why! Really laid back, so many travellers and everyone's really friendly. Can see we will like it here!
Got shown some of the market nightlife by one of the guests here last night and tried my first lot of sticky rice, actually really nice but definitely sticky!!
Went wandering round the town today, stocked up on mozzie repellant and I brought myself some proper hippie trousers, now I feel like I'm definitely one of the traveller gang! :-)
We're sitting in Julie's garden now having a beer and then shortly we'll head off to the Saturday night market where hopefully we'll bump into Jens and Vicky again then tomorrow we are going to do a walking tour of Chiang Mai and hopefully on Sunday an Elephant trek or cooking course!!!
Promise I will put some pictures up soon, haven't had the time to find a Internet cafe yet! Sorry!!
Miss and love you all, Stevie and Matthew xxxx
