Driving north from Kaikoura we passed some amazing scenery with mountains on our left and beautiful blue oceans on our right, we hadn't read much about this part of the South Island which got us wandering if this place doesn't even get a mention what will the famous scenery be like. We found our way along another side road to Marfell beach which was an even better spot than the night before. We were able to back the van up so that we could look out onto the ocean, after dinner and a few hands of cards we fell asleep looking out on to the moonlit sea.
After a little lie in we took yet another walk along the beach, as we approached the end of the beach we could see hundreds of birds out on the water so we decided to clamber our way along the rocks to get a closer look. There were hundreds if not thousands of birds who were constantly moving around in waves diving down to feed off fish that were obviously swimming in huge shoals. We were able to get incredibly close and we sat for as long as possible just watching them (video uploaded) swarm in front of us. It was a great experience and a total fluke for us to witness it.
