Hi all,
I thought it was about time for a new entry since I've been out of range for a while. Since my last entry i've been to pawana, ajenta, ellora caves, arnahgabad, and back to mumbai. It's been some pretty intense and busy weeks and i've wanted to share so badly!
I've had so many pictures to put up but since i dont have a flashdrive i can't take them to the internet cafe yet. As soon as i figure that one our i'll be sure to post them.
A little update on me. It's my fourth week here and for a week and a half i've had a sinus infection. At first they thought it was just allergies and kept pushing anti-histamines at me. But after visiting a doctor at the slum clinic i know have a prescription for an anti-biotic and a decongestant. I'll tell you, i never thought id have a sinus infection in frickin india- delhi belly maybe- but not a sinus infection. I tell you this chronic sinusitis runs like clockwork.
I guess I could entertain you with a few stories from the past week. I obviously wont be able to go into them in detail but it'll give you a good glimpse at what i've been doing while i've been here. I think i'll start with the most recent.
Saturday Rachel and I travelled around Pune. We visited Ghandi's memorial where his secretary, his wife, and his ashes are burried. It was the most amazing thing to be where he was imprisoned and walk the same grounds that he walked. After that we went these 8th century caves that were just hidden in the middle of the city- purely spiritual and amazing.
Before that we went Ajenta and Ellora caves. They were amazing in themselves but the stories before and after the caves were more amazing. First we get to our hotel and there's a fricken cat under my bed until 3am when we find it and let it out (that story is to be elaborated on later ;)). Another story to be elaborated on later is when we were boarding the government bus and while we were boarding i elbowed grandma in the neck to stop her from getting ahead of me AND managed to stop an entire mob from getting on the bus while i picked up rachel's fallen water bottle. We thought that the crisis of getting a seat had been diverted UNTIL we hear this rap on the window from this old Sihk man yelling at me that i am a quote, "foolish girl". why you might ask? oh yeah, i'm supposed to know that throwing your hankie from the outside of teh window is supposed to mean you've saved that seat- my bad. so we had this little seat war for about five minutes. pretty awesome and intense. I'll have to elaborate on that too once i get my flash drive. hillarious, i can't do that story justice.
We had a huge fight with our medical director which was really rediculous. it made me cry. anyway, im just happy to be out of pune and in mumbai again. they've got a great ESTABLISHED program here. today we went through the slums and observed crazy cases. a little girl came in with scabes and a 103 fever. A mother-in-law came in feeling "ill" but all she did was complain about her daughter-in-law.. 10 minutes later (no joke!) the daughter in law came in complaining about her mother in law. Same family!! So funny. Very entertaining. I've got a new phone number so if anyone wants to call me its +919-987-399-380. That's only for this week. Once we get to dehra dun on sunday i'll have another number. Hopefully soon i'll be able to put new pictures up too.
I love getting messages from you all and I hope all are doing well. I'd like to give a little shout out to Meg. I know it's her birthday tomorrow (Feb. 5th) and that she leaves for Costa Rica today (?). I want to wish her the best of luck and i hope that she has a great time. I can't wait to compare experiences!
I can't believe this program is almost half way over. I feel like I've learned so much about health care and so much about myself already. This was a hard decision for me to make, but I'm happy that i made the choice to go to India.
I'll write more when i have the chance (and Rupees for internet cafes). Miss you all!
